js1000 · 06/04/2009 22:15

Please Recommend good, powerful vacuum cleaner for wooden flooring .
I bought Hoover brand vacuum couple of months back which is total waste of money.
I ve heard dyson ones are good but which one... they r quite exp. but if they do good job, sply at picking hair and tiny pieces of paper cuttings then i wouldnt mind spending lil but more.
Thanks in advance.

Hello!

We've noticed this thread is quite old and some of the product recommendations are a little out of date. We've spent weeks speaking to parents and testing out vacuum cleaners, so here's the best vacuum cleaner 2018 as recommended by Mumsnetters.

Hope this helps! Flowers

Get a Henry - they're excellent and very powerful, good on hard floors and carpets, and easy to move around with & get underneath and into corners with etc. I had a Dyson before and found it really heavy and difficult - upright hoovers are rubbish!

Which Model ? Thnx MotherofInvention!

Dyson animal is great for picking up hair. Not sure if they work on wooden floor though. You can get cylinder ones. I don't like uprights.

megcleary · 06/04/2009 22:30

I love my henry

Clement · 06/04/2009 22:31

sebo vacs are generally v good. but i don't think they make mine anymore exactly.

MrsMerryBunnyGirlHenry · 06/04/2009 22:36

Is a Henry better than a Miele cylinder vacuum?

MotherofInvention · 06/04/2009 22:48

A Henry is a Henry, I think, unless you want a pink one that they call Hetty... They are often used by professional cleaners in offices etc, because they are so powerful and easy to handle. Never had a Miele, sorry - no idea. But I'm quite old fashioned when it comes to hoovers - not sure about all this newfangled cylinder bagless stuff. Maybe you can find some reviews on Argos or something? In any case I'd recommend getting one cheaper on ebay if cost is an issue-maybe sell your old one there too or flog it on gumtree.

There was a good thread on this recently when I was looking for a new one. After reading posts on that thread, and looking at reviews on Argos website, and looking at the Which? results (so I was quite thorough ) we plumped for a Dyson DC 25 All Floors (ut's one of the new ball ones). You press a button when going from carpet to hard flooring and vice versa, to stop the beater bars going round. Quite expensive so shop around on the web to get best deals.

Our previous one was a Dyson and had finally given up the ghost - we'd had it nearly 10 years so not bad, and had fantastic suction (oo-er, misss) but I had been put off getting another Dyson as the odd bit of plastic had broken off on the attachments etc

This one seems much more solid, and so far we're very pleased - it gives good suck . Have heard the DC24 All floors is good too - it's just a bit smaller and lighter (I think it's supposed to be more suitable for smaller homes like flats and things as the handle folds down, and the cylinder bit is smaller).

I think the DC24 comes in an Animal version too - which is supposed to be extra good at picking up hair if you have a pet (or are extra hairy!!!).

As you can see, I'm a bit sad and did a lot of research on this. I think the geekiness must have rubbed off on the rest of my family because honestly, you would not believe the excitement when it got delivered. DH broke out into a sweat he was so excited to start using this exciting new "engine", and as for the DS (5 and 3), they got more excited than they did on Xmas day at the fact that it was a hoover on a ball!

poshwellies · 06/04/2009 23:02

I go with Sebo-I use one for my cleaning job,it's ace.We have a Dyson which isn't that great tbh (upright job) and have had a Hoover bagless (shite) and a Henry before that (good all rounder).Sebo wins hands down.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 06/04/2009 23:03

Must admit, though, it's all very well saying that the ball design helps you to move it on a curve rather than just backwards and forwards in a straight line, but I found it puts quite a strain on my wrists, and I am used to the extra weight of an upright (have never had the Henry type ones - whenever I've used them in someone else's house, they just seem a pain in the arse to drag around).

Mind you, my wrists are totally skinny and puny like a child's so it's no wonder really.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 06/04/2009 23:05

Have heard Sebo are good too, poshwellies. I was tempted to get on. Although, trying to get DH to try anythiing other than a blardy Dyson......honestly, I think he maybe wants to have James Dyson's babies .

CurlyhairedAssassin · 06/04/2009 23:07

Tempted to get one, not get on it obviously! Ooh the thought.....

poshwellies · 06/04/2009 23:12

I have childlike wrists too .

Seriously, the Sebo I use is brilliant, both on hard wood floors and carpetted areas-I'm thinking of buying one now (although I don't really want the expensive of buying bags but I have noticed a vast difference with bagged and bagless). It's very light to drag around too!.

Jackaroo · 07/04/2009 10:01

Sebo. I bought one with my last bit of cash after buying my first house as recommended by the guy at John Lewis (who drew me away from something even more expensive), and have had nothing but great results for the last ... um... 11 years!! So far not a thing has gone wrong (touching wood).. they also make the cleaners for hospitals etc., which I found out afterwards. Not beautiful, but well built, nothing drops off (and how many of us can say that?)...and from the look of the website, I had the most bog standard one... X1.1 www.sebo.co.uk/

SEBO

crockydoodle · 07/04/2009 13:50

Miele - well built and good suction. Bits don't break off it like dyson.

js1000 · 07/04/2009 14:36

Now i have to choose between Sebo n Henry .....Thank u so much for great replies.
