Boring thread about bathroom cleaning...

OK, I have a new bathroom - yippee

Anyway, I want to establish a cleaning routine to make sure it stays in pristing condition. It's white suite, separate shower and white tiles.

So I want all the gory details of your bathroom cleaning routine? What do you clean? How often? What cleaner products do you use? If you wipe round the sink every night, what do you do with that cloth? Does it go straight in the wash?

Thank you!

I love my steam cleaner. It gets all the icky stuff out of all those icky places. I mop up any wet left with an old terry nappy and chuck it in the wash when I'm done.

If you've only got a few minutes to do something, polish the taps and then wipe any mirrors.

Our bathroom is tiny but has several mirrors so it looks bigger than it actually is.

Black towels will look great against the white background. I've found white towels don't stay white for long in our busy bathroom.

Thanks Fragilemum.
How often do you wipe up the wet with an old terry nappy? Do you do that every day?

In theory I swish around daily a la Flylady, but in practice I don't want to reveal the truth.

Sometimes I do get into a daily habit though, and I use a few bio-degradable wipes, or just swish with a wet cloth then quickly wipe with a dry one - only takes a couple of mins.

If I use a cloth, yes, it should go straight in the wash.
And, obviously, never use the loo cloth for the sink or bath.

Thanks Nontoxic - I can't bear the thought of going on flylady website, so that's helpful.

I have 2 main bathroom routines.

  1. get a squeegie/windowcleaner type thing keep it in the shower, after EVERY shower do the glass and tiles it really really slows the limescale build up.

  2. keep stack of old tshirts / cloths around and every morning after brushing your teeth wipe the dry cloth around the sink and tap to dry them/shine them.

It really really works.

Nontoxic · 01/04/2009 22:51

I'm liking the t-shirt/cloth thing (sad), but I can't help thinking the loo and flush handle should be cleaned every day (although I don't do mine every day).
Also the bit of floor around the loo.

roisin · 02/04/2009 17:25

I like the stack of old tshirts/cloth thing, but where do you keep them? We haven't sorted out storage for the bathroom yet, but have minimal space spare anyway in which to sort out storage!

I have a cupboard under the sink in my bathroom they are in there.
if you don't have space for loads just have one hanging on the radiator - use it for a couple of days then change it.

Non toxic, flash wipes are genius (I do find they don't shine my taps the way a dry cloth does.)

claireybeeinmyeasterbonnet · 02/04/2009 17:37

I give the sink a quick wipe around daily (or most days anyway). Just use a damp cloth apart from when I do a big clean and the cloth gets rinsed out and left on the radiator til the next day-gets washed after the big clean.

Toilet also wiped around most days, I usually use a cloth (different cloth to rest of bathroom) and chuck it in the nappy bucket straight afterwards. I was given a pack of wipes though and I have to confess I feel less icky using them even though I know they are evil! I think my main thing is that with a cloth I seem to move fluff/dust around on the seat etc but the wipes pick it up.

Shower/bath cleaned 2/3 times a week-either wiped over with ecover stuff or sprayed with flash with bleach and wiped then rinsed.

Nontoxic · 02/04/2009 17:47

Fear not CBIMEB - you can get bio-degradable wipes - not so evil!

Pannacotta · 02/04/2009 17:51

I found some organic/biodegradable wipes in JOhn Lewis which are great.
But I won't confess my bathroom cleaning regime as its not something I am proud of.......

BonsoirAnna · 02/04/2009 17:55

Get e-cloths - you use less "product" with them.

What kind of bath do you have? Baths are quite fragile and need gentle daily cleaning IMO. Non-rinse shower sprays are great.

Is your water hard? If so, you will need to use anti-calcium product which is DEATH to enamel baths, so go very carefully.

roisin · 02/04/2009 21:13

Thanks all.

I think what I need to do is decide on a time to clean the bathroom every day and stick to it.

Why is everything so complicated?
We have soft water, I guess that is good.
The bath doesn't get used often - the boys are 9 and 11 so allergic to water, and not yet sweaty/smelly teenagers! Dh and I mostly shower. So I hope I shouldn't need to clean the bath every day.

I have no idea what sort of bath it is
A fairly standard one (=not expensive) though a funny shape.

I'm trying to pick a colour now to paint the untiled bits of walls. Any suggestions for that?!
