which one is the best for delivery? Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury's

I shop in Sainsbury's, the street market and LIDL. But since I'm pregnant, have no car and have a bad back I'm considering just ordering online.
Which one do you recommend in terms of service and prices?
Thanks!

I use Tesco a lot and have rarely been disappointed. Used Asda and Sainsbury's once each without a problem either. I liked that with Sainsbury's you get a 1 hour slot instead of 2 with the others.

Ocado

ChocFudgeCake · 17/03/2009 22:10

Thanks Ceolas. Good to know about the slot times.

Well yes, ELvislive, but not where I live. That's why I said I also go to LIDL, so you have an idea of budget restrictions

I use Sainsburys through sheer force of habit - I have my usuals list with them so it's quicker to order. If they miss the delivery slot and you complain to the driver in a polite and civil kind of way you can get a voucher for money off your next order.

You might want to select "no substitutes" for some items. I got 2kg of radishes once because they were out of rhubarb (!). But on a more mundane level, I can quite see that if they are all out of 2 pint organic semi-skimmed milks, it is hard for a shopper to know whether I want a 2 pint, a semi-skimmed or an organic milk. I order both 1 pint and 2 pint cartons in the same order, no substitutes, and then I know at least some milk will come.

I've used Tesco and Sainsbury's - attempted to use Ocado but gave up on their website in a huff!

Tesco usually have slightly better prices and the best navigable website imo. You can put in precise substitutions if the product you want is not available. There are also Tesco voucher codes available on-line which often negates the delivery charge - but you have to put these in the first time you check out, you can't add them later. However, I have stopped using Tesco because I don't think the quality is that great but also they offer 2 hour time slots yet my delivery often wasn't made inside that time, a pita if you've got plans later on. They offer no refund of delivery charge if they are late.

I use Sainsbury's in one of their cheaper mid-week slots. They offer 1 hour slots which they are very good about meeting. If they are late they give you £10 to put towards your next shopping bill. Personally think the quality is better but you can't make substitions (they make a best guess for you and you reject it on the doorstep if you don't like it) and they've stopped doing promotional on-line vouchers since they were badly scammed a few years back but they will mail you directly with offers. You can add vouchers at any point.

The my supermarket website broke my Ocado habit - the same trolley was about £20 more expensive there.

BlackLetterDay · 17/03/2009 22:16

I like Tesco the best, sainsburys is fine, although quite a lot of substitutes, asda mucked up my first shop so I didn't bother with them again. Tesco do sometimes leave things off, but I find the frequent random extras you seem to get and the voucher codes floating about on the web make it the best value. I got 6 bottles of radox handwash, 2 airwick refills and a box of cereal I didn't order the other week would have loved to have seen the rest of the order.

Heated · 17/03/2009 22:19

Oh yes meant to add that Tesco have an online complaints form if anything is wrong with the order but Sainsbury's is a pain and you have to phone - and they often make out they are doing you the favour by giving you the refund. I leave that to dh who likes commplaining.

On the other hand, Sainsburys always ring if they are going to be late delivering. Tesco couldn't give a stuff.

ChocFudgeCake · 17/03/2009 22:22

Thanks everyone! I'm getting the picture. Have not heard of mysupermarket, Fridayschild. I'll go and find out.

Asda was rubbish when I used it.

Sainsburys was okay but got lots of substitutes and veg not great.

Waitrose Deliver was very good and highly recommend.

Used Ocado for first time tonight and they were excellent; will definitely use them again. We have only just got Ocado here.

MaureenMLove · 17/03/2009 22:24

It's difficult to advise on service, since it depends on the branch its coming from. I do Sainsburys too and have found them to be absolutely fine. I always book a slot on Tues, Wed or Thurs, because it's free delivery over £100 and I only shop monthly, so that's no problem. They ring if they are going to be late OR early and both reward with £10 off next shop for the inconvenience. The only thing that does bug me slightly, is that, because I use a Nectar card, my 'Usuals' aren't just listed from my internet shop, but anything that Ive bought in Sainsburys and used my Nectar card on in the last month!

Ceolas · 17/03/2009 22:31

Oh yes with Tesco there are usually voucher codes on this thread. And if you use your clubcard anything you buy in store comes up in your favourites

MrsGokWan · 17/03/2009 22:56

Beware though if you have a Electron card. Tesco's don't accept them online and Asda put a hold on the money when you place the order and then when they put the order together they process the card and take the money out and then don't release the money they have put a hold on untill several days later. It caused no end of problems fo me this week .

I will not be using Asda again unfortunatly because of this. It is a pain in the ass because when going through www.mymoneysupermarket.com they were £25 cheaper on that order and I was putting in things for my next order and they were still ton's cheaper. I will say though the driver was really great and friendly and the one substitution I had was a more expensive than the original item and they charged me the same as the cheaper item and it was a good substitution.

MrsGokWan · 17/03/2009 23:00

Sorry wrong link

www.mysupermarket.com

Ceolas · 17/03/2009 23:09

I don't understand mrsgok. Putting a hold on the money? Are you effectively charged twice? Confused

ChocFudgeCake · 17/03/2009 23:36

Hi again, I went to mysupermarket and was very happy with the advice on better deals. At the end Sainsbury's was cheaper. My back and purse thank you

Ceolas, no they don't charge you twice in the end. They release the hold several days after the delivery. With an Electron account the money is guaranteed at the time of purchase and not several days later when they put the order together. What their system should do is use the money it has allocated but the pickers or who ever process the card again and you are lucky if there is enough money in your account. The original amount is then relased and appears as able to be used several days later in your account. With an order of £140 it really buggered me up!!
