really?? but it's made for baking with... ?

StealthPolarBear · 17/03/2009 19:47

That's what I thought tiy
Glad it isn't just me
Just looked at the box and mine is called greaseproof and baking paper anyway! Says 'oven safe' on the side! Yet within seconds it had all gone black and bits of it had set on fire!

how hot was the oven?

StealthPolarBear · 17/03/2009 20:04

200C - my usual temp for jacket potatoes.
I've just had a look at the box and there was nothing about safe use or temperatures. Think I might complain as it was really scary!

Yes and no fires here...yet.

Lmccrean · 17/03/2009 21:59

Was it touching the element? Mine has gone on fire when it touched it.

thumbwitch · 17/03/2009 22:00

all the time in baking - under biscuits, lining tins etc. That's what it's for, innit? Gas oven too. However, for baking my oven is rarely above gas 5 or 6 at the outside.

Perhaps if you were using it wrapped around jacket potatoes, that was the problem - if used in baking, it will take on some of the grease which might increase its "flash" point.

sorry - MN went weird on me!

Bakersman · 17/03/2009 22:03

I use baking parchment all the time with no problems... however dh used it under the grill to flaming effect
Are you sure it wasn't on grill by accident?

WilyWombat · 17/03/2009 22:06

I use unbleached baking paper, it is superb but it does seem to burn sometimes.

ThingOne · 17/03/2009 22:19

I use baking parchment but not sure how it differs - I mostly only use it for making gingerbread men!

StealthPolarBear · 18/03/2009 10:47

The more I think about this the more annoyed I get. It was really scary, and even once I'd removed it there were charred bits at the bottom of the oven I couldn't remove which might have meant our meal was ruined.
Bakersman - no, definitely wasn't the grill, I've only ahd to make that mistake once to never make it again
Lmccrean, I wonder if that was it. Was on a higher shelf than usual so I wonder if that was why.
Not sure if I dare risk it again.

I use it when cooking meringue (but admittedly not at 200 degrees!). It's fine, not even singed at 150 and it's in there for an hour.

PistachioLemon · 06/04/2009 20:44

I use it all the time and put bits on top of cakes if they're getting a bit too brown but not ready to come out yet. It's never happened to me, but I think the max I've ever had it at is 180C.

Does the oven work after the paper is set alight as I am mid baking for a party.any thanks.

aa80 · 24/03/2017 06:45

Many thanks

wowfudge · 24/03/2017 08:02

I can't imagine why anyone needed to use greaseproof paper to cook baked potatoes anyway - just put them directly on the oven shelf.
