Toys in the living room?

We have loads. We want to clear some space before our new baby arrives. And I want to make it easier for me as I spend so much time tidying in there it is unblievable. DD is only 14 months so doesn't understand putting things away and just has loads of random toys rather than say one box of lego, one box of this etc so they just all end up out at the same time!

But at the same time I don't want DD to be bored. Was thinking about rotating the toys but I know that wouldn't end up happening in this house!

Would be interested to see other peoples ideas and opinions and how you make this work for you.

With dd I have tried to enforce a one toy at a time rule but it's not going to happen. What I do is have a big toy box for dressing up clothes and random little bits of toys and the rest is in her room in Ikea boxes- one box for all her ponies, one for her Peppa pig things, one for her teaset, that kind of thing and she knows she has to put one box away before getting another one out. That way the tidying up is done throughout the day so she only ever has one box to put away before bedtime. So far it seems to work

we rotate a box from the playroom.

We've got those pop up basket type things from ikea. Both DS's have 1 each. Anything that won't fit in there goes up to thier rooms and we changethe toys regularly

i have a storage chest in living room and rest of toys in her room. Rotate the toys in chest every month or so.

we have this It's good because it rolls out on castors so no worries about lids dropping on heads. it looks good (better than in the pic) and toys or kids can also sit on top.

like this. Not sure if they're wasing baskets or not but they do the trick!

Have sorted through them and have got 2 big crates of toys to go upstairs now! You wouldn't think I had a tiny living room (Still have more than enough toys for DD to play with too!).

Now the problem is tomorrow when I have to find space for them upstairs!!

Still sorting through the living room but neither DD or my bad back and pregnancy sickness/tiredness are helping matters!

The expedit range at Ikea is fantastic at swallowing up toys. Get a few baskets for the odd shaped toys, and then all the books, games, puzzles etc just go in one of the compartments. Worth every penny!

In the living room we have a nice wicker cube basket with lid on it that has all DS's little toys, but we also have some of his bigger toys sitting on the floor (currently baby walker, ride on train, rocking horse). He also has an Ikea pop up basket in his room plus older baby toys, we are keeping them for the new baby coming this summer. I'm thinking though I should take some more upstairs though....
