Does anyone have 2 vacuum cleaners? (ooh I'm such a rebel!)

Serious question - our Miele has, infuriatingly, stopped working a few weeks after the guarantee expired. Have been told by their customer services to replace the filter & if that doesn't work can get an engineer to try & fix it (£65 minimum charge).

Trouble is, I expect it is my fault it's broken as I'm a bit heavy handed when I vacuum - tend to treat as an 'anger management' session (crash, thud, bloomin' council tax, thwack, thwack, supermarket queues) so don't know if getting it fixed will become a regular thing. Also, I seem to be constantly using it to sweep up after dp's diy projects & the children's breadcrumbs with orange juice, which doesn't do the vacuum any good.

So, would I be better off with a Henry for the really messy stuff & the Miele for regular cleaning?? Or am I being a bit wasteful when what I should be doing is getting on my hands and knees and scrubbing?

I had upright dyson for main cleaning and little John Lewis cylinder for stairs and quick jobs.
Both broke at nearly the same time though so I bought a new Dyson roller ball thats light enough to do stairs too. LOVE it!

i must have recomended henry enough on here to get a free one! i worked in shops for years and everywhere i worked had a henry, as you would imagine in a work environment things dont get looked after, they get thrown and kicked about but henrys dont break!

nancy75, would you suggest any particular kind of Henry or would a basic one be good enough? I'm trying not to be tempted by all the fancy extras they do now. Thanks for the recommendation.

We have two vacuum cleaners. The old one which is a Henry and has been demoted to cleaning the garage (for cleaning sand out of the car, cleaning up after DIY) and a 2-yr old Dyson for everyday weekly use.

moaningminnie2020 · 13/03/2009 12:40

My mum always had a vacuum for upstairs and a vacuum for downstairs it was a good size house though.

I use the Dyson for normal cleaning and a (rubbish) russell hobbs cylinder for things that might cause problems, eg DIY mess, plaster/brick dust etc.

Are henrys good for normal cleaning then? Only my Dyson is ancient and not expecting it to live forever, its a DC01 and 9/10 yrs old.

TheThoughtPolice · 13/03/2009 12:42

Yes

Dyson upright
Henry cylinder

Dyson great on thicker carpets in the house but useless on hard floors and stairs. Henry does all the jobs the Dyson can't and vice-versa.

Henry has a pink sister now called Hetty!

I have a dyson upright, a handheld thingy that appears to have lost its ability to charge, and as of Monday, a Roomba .

Actually there's an ancient Henry stylee vacuum in the garage that DH uses for clearing up after DIY

OMG - there's also a VAX for shampooing the carpets, technically not mine but seems to be on permanent loan.

Five hoovers is probably a bit excessive so two is perfectly acceptable.

I have to admit I have 4 vacuum cleaners only 2 that I use at the moment one upstairs and one downstairs saves lugging them up and down the stairs. In the loft is the one that MIL bought for a wedding present nearly 40 years ago it still works perfectly, I keep it for sentimental reasons as MIL died over 32 years ago. In the shed is the other one belonged to SIL is only 3 years old she said it didn't work and was chucking it out my SIN mended it only a small problem with the lead near the plug.

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 15/03/2009 18:56

Err, I have upstairs and downstairs vacuum cleaners too. Tall house, lots of stairs.

alicecrail · 17/03/2009 13:05

We don't have a very big house but we got a bissel to do all carpet shampooing, really good hoovering and hard wood cleaning, and kept our little crappy one to do upstairs as the bissel weighs too much to get it up and down stairs

Erm - in my defence, this is partly due to the fact I'm a sucker for a bargain.

  • Dyson upright which DP especially loves.
  • Miele Cat & Dog cylinder which I love, especially for hard floors.
  • Panasonic ancient thing for upstairs (ought to be binned really as it's actually quite crap).
  • New Bissell Pet Eraser which is brilliant and rapidly becoming number 1 favourite for me.
  • Polti steam vacuum for deep down cleaning (again wouldn't be parted from it).
  • Hand held dustbuster thingy for quick clean-ups and zipping over the stairs.

DP now has a separate Karcher thing for DIY jobs as he has twice caused the beloved Dyson to have a nervous breakdown.

Mum just bought an Oreck and that is amazingly light.

Me! One upstairs (dyson) and one downstairs (miele). We have 60 steps in our house. We also had one in the basement, then it broke.

I want a Hetty.
