Need a new vacuum cleaner - any recommendations please?

My vacuum cleaner seems to have given up completely, so I think it's time for a new one. I'm just not sure what to get, and would welcome any advice.

I've currently got a Dyson DC01 which I've had for 11 years. It's been ok, the only complaint is that it's quite heavy when carried up and downstairs.

So, should I get another Dyson, or do you recommend anything else?

My Miele has just been offed by my father so I will read in interest. The Miele was really good and I preferred it to the Dyson we had previously, but we are a wooden floor family so have no need for an upright.

slackrunner · 07/03/2009 09:23

Miele, Miele, Miele. Have owned Dysons before, and have found the Miele far superior.

SlightlyMadScotland · 07/03/2009 09:24

Miele is hte one that I always seen recommended. I have just never brought myself to it because they are cylinders.

Having said that I don't love my Dyson which I thought I would....maybe I was expecting too much from all teh hype. It is good...but maybe I was expecting more from the hype IYSWIM.

NorbertDentressangle · 07/03/2009 09:28

I'll be watching this with interest as I'm in a similar position.

We had an upright Dyson for about 9 years, it packed up last Xmas -as it was Xmas and we didn't really have a few hundred £££££s spare we bought a cheap LG bagless but that falling to bits after 13 months and is a PITA.

Anyway, as a result I now want another Dyson (or equivalent) but not a top of the range silly-priced one.

I've seen a few good offers for DC19 Origin cylinder Dysons but the reviews on Amazon weren't great (not good on carpet apparently and although we have a lot of wooden and tiled floors we also have some carpets and rugs)

Miele miele miele. All the way.

Last forever and do a brilliant job.

pooka · 07/03/2009 09:32

Also used to be anti cylinder vacuum cleaners. But have since had a lightbulb moment re: why on earth would I want to push the heavy upright around, when instead I can push the hose and vacuum head with minimal effort and the suction on the miele's is brilliant.

BirdyArms · 07/03/2009 09:36

I am very happy with a sebo that I bought recently. Assistant in John Lewis told me that they are similar quality to the miele but better value, think mine was about £20 cheaper than the equivalant miele. Miele was a bit nicer looking though, I think this is the reason why sebos aren't more popular.

Re: miele -whats the set-up with filters? I want simple

I liked the Dyson as you just whipped out the flat fabric filter and rinsed it/replaced it.

The LG has been a pain as you have to take out a big plastic bit, then remove this cylindrical concertina filter that is a PITA to wash and takes ages to dry.

pooka · 07/03/2009 09:40

When you buy the cleaner bags, some filters are in the box. Just whip out the old and put in the new. Never really had to change a filter apart from occasionally and recently after I used my miele to help get rid of a massive pile of plaster/dust when one of our ceilings fell in.

tessieb · 07/03/2009 09:48

Thanks for your suggestions. Will definately look at the Miele and Sebo.

I've got mainly carpets throughout and don't have any pets in the house - don't know if this makes any difference to what I should get.

Miele! filters piece of piss to change, they come in the packs with the hoover bags, they say to change them regularly, but I don't do mine that often really. I bought mine from John Lewis and they were really keen on the miele, and not at all keen on the dyson

Ronaldinhio · 07/03/2009 09:51

another one for miele
far better than the dyson
won best vacuum in which as well
especially good if you have pets

tessieb · 07/03/2009 09:52

Seems like the Miele's definately winning so far!

Next time I am having a Meile.

I have long hair. DTDs have long hair and DD3 is getting long hair.

I am hoping that a cyliner won't suffer the same hari tangling effects as an upright as t doesn't have the same beater bar....

neversaydie · 07/03/2009 10:14

Another Miele user here - much better than the old Dyson upright it replaced. Although my Roomba picks up stuff that the Miele misses.

mrsmaidamess · 07/03/2009 10:19

Henry

tessieb · 07/03/2009 10:21

Another question - I've always had an upright vacuum cleaner before, is a cylinder one easier to use?

OP posts:
pooka · 07/03/2009 10:48

I find them much easier - more mobile, easier to get into smaller spaces, less fiddly when changing to different vacuum heads. Not as heavy to push and easier for doing stairs.

NorbertDentressangle · 07/03/2009 14:03

I've just had a look at Miele ones but they have bags and I want bagless.

Does anyone know about Vax cylinder bagless ones? I've found quite a few of those on offer at the moment

SlightlyMadScotland · 07/03/2009 14:05

I have had a VAX upright bagless. It was aFAB for a couple of weeks but quality of suction went downhill rapidly.

It was also v v v noisy.

NorbertDentressangle · 07/03/2009 14:17

That sounds like my LG one SMS -was great the first few times but as soon as there was any dust in the filter it had zero suction.

I keep getting drawn back to Dyson but theres so many to chose from that I don't know where to start

SlightlyMadScotland · 07/03/2009 14:27

What have you got against a bag? I know that they are supposed to be more powerful - but Meile really do get excellent reviews - nobody can touch them for quality or consistency of review.

littlemissbossy · 07/03/2009 14:34

Another vote for Miele here. I bought one after recommendations from a friend and other mners. I have a bagged version but buying the bags and changing them is no hassle at all. I've had it about 2 years with no problems, suction as good as the day I bought it

NorbertDentressangle · 07/03/2009 14:38

Basically it boils down to being a lazy-arse

I like just being able to take the "bin" part out when you can see its full, empty it and slot it back in. Hey presto, away you go.

My experience of bagged ones is that you can't see when they're full, they are a PITA and fiddly to change or empty, you have to buy the bags (which involves finding somewhere that stocks them, remembering to buy them and then when you get them home remembering where you've put the spares !)

SlightlyMadScotland · 07/03/2009 14:43

Ahhh but if you are a lazy ares I find that I have to empty the bucket far more frequently than I had to change a bag (and the last one I had which was a electrolux had a bag full indicator);

I am have a Miele next time - although have only had my dyson for about 6m,...would someone please remind me when I ask for opions!
