Does such a thing exist? Something to hang eyelet curtains with not directly on the curtain pole............

FAQinglovely · 04/03/2009 14:26

basically I have 5 pairs of (brand new) Eyelet curains that I got off freecycle before Christmas. They're MUCH nicer than the horrible flowery things currentl up.

Thing is they're not quite wide enough to hang using the eyelets along the curtain pole - but I think if I hung something (like curtain rings) on the pole and hung the curtains from them (so they're not so scrunched up at the top) they would be able to be closed all the way.

Still wouldn't look great -but a hell of a lot better than the current curtains which resemble something like this

Problem is all the curtain rings I could find in town today were for normal curtain hooks - but I want something that can "hook" through the eyelets (does that make sense?)

I even look for some large "S" hooks as they would do the job - but couldn't find any big enough.

anything from here any good? thinking of the ones with clips attached

FAQinglovely · 04/03/2009 16:47

they may work - not sure - I couldn't believe I could't find anything in town - not even in the DIY shop that sells every hook/clip/etc you can ever imagine.

I even went into a haberdashery shop to see if they had any ribbon/velcro type stuff that I could use to make "tab top" curtains using the ribbbon/velcro as the tabs.

maybe something like this sort of thing - but obviously not in horrible white plastic. So I could hang the "ring" on the pole that is there (which is wooden) and then feed the eyelets (which are silver coloured) through the ring.

I don't know - really but there has to be something - I can't be the first person in the world to have wanted to hang their eyelet curtains not directly on the pole .............can I????

they had shower hooks in silver on that page, called ekvator, look a bit like fishhook earrings

FAQinglovely · 04/03/2009 18:16

oh yes - just seem them............ermm dumb question - I can see the bit the pole goes through - how do you stick a curtain onto it

You could consider using s-hooks (butchers' hooks.)
The first site I came across for them was www.premiercutlery.co.uk.
They're the sort of thing that goes on hanging racks, or metal rails to hold utensils (or to hang the teatowel off the Aga!)

Nontoxic · 04/03/2009 18:31

But actually, thinking about my shower curtains, they're eyelet curtains hung from a pole, so I'd probably look for silver or gold (whichever matches best) or even a colour.

FAQinglovely · 04/03/2009 18:32

non-toxic - yes they would work ok just need to make sure they're big enough - could only find tiddly little s hooks when I was looking in town today which - even if they did fit through the curtain pole would look really silly.

These are 7cm, which should be about right?

or these:

SoupDragon · 04/03/2009 18:36

I don't think S hooks would stay on the pole when you pull the curtains. This kind of thing would work.

FAQinglovely · 04/03/2009 18:37

all the curtain poles in the house are either dark or light wood. The curtains are all creams/browns. 4 different sets of curtains - (all brand new) got them off freecycle before Christmas.

I really want something I can buy in bulk and use for all of them

At ww.balineum.co.uk you can get fancy ones -who knew?!

southeastastra · 04/03/2009 18:40

can't you just use some nice thick ribbon? would be a pain as you'd have to re-arrange them every time you drew them though.

FAQinglovely · 04/03/2009 18:41

Soupy - but then wouldn't I have whopping great "holes" (the eyelets) at the top of my curtains not being used for anything.

I rather like these - can't see the curtains falling off with that degree of curviture in them would they?? (well not unless I go swinging on them

But they're a bit expensive considering how many I'd have to buy - each curtain has 8 eyelets in it so I guess I'd need 80???? - eek.

Although I suppose I could just do a few curtains at a time - like the horrible rose ones downstairs.

Soupdragon, you'reright about the s-hooks - but aren't those clip ones for use with plain-topped curtains?
If you've got eyelts don't you need aomething to feed through them, otherwise you've got curtains with holes in them.

Haylstones · 04/03/2009 18:46

How good are you at sewing? Tab tops are actually really easy to make- if you could make enough of them you could add them to the top of the curtains then sew a matching panel of fabric along the top thus covering up the eyelets? That's what i'd do!

FAQinglovely · 04/03/2009 18:49

ermm I'm hopeless at sewing - but did venture into the sewing type shops into town today in the hopes that I could find something there to use.

OP posts:
Haylstones · 04/03/2009 18:54

It would be really easy, honestly. Do you have a sewing machine? Or even just a needle and thread- it is doable by hand... You could maybe wundaweb them but I'm not sure how well it would work.

LackaDAISYcal · 04/03/2009 18:55

I got some rings with little clips on in IKEA a few years ago. so the rings went on the pole and then clipped onto the curtains. Is that the sort of thing you mean?

FAQinglovely · 04/03/2009 18:56

no I don't have a sewing machine...........and I can't even sew a button on so that it stays on (my poor mother despairs of me as she made all our clothes when we were little........)

And then wouldn't I have to find material that matches the curtains too?? There's 5 pairs of curtains, 4 different colours/patterns.

OP posts:
Haylstones · 04/03/2009 18:56

To make the tabs you just get a strip of fabric, sew the edges together while inside out, turn the right way again and iron it flat- taaadaaa! Slightly trickier is attaching them to the curtain but definitely doable even for non-sewers!

Haylstones · 04/03/2009 18:58

It wouldn't have to be the same. It could co-ordinate/ contrast with the curtain, making the tabs and strip along the op the same colour- go on, give it a go!

FAQinglovely · 04/03/2009 18:59

but I want my curtains (well need actually) hung my next Friday evening...........and I have the rest of downstairs to sort out as well, plus my studying to do. Even if I could sew I'm not sure I'm going to find the time.

OP posts:
LackaDAISYcal · 04/03/2009 18:59

oh, I'm confused. Did you mean long enough which is why you are looking for a hook thing to make them hang lower?

southeastastra · 04/03/2009 19:01

just tie some ribbons on, you can do a little bow.
