Seriously. How do I wash a black dress with white stripes?

I'm trying to find some colour catchers, but am not in UK so can't just waltz into Tescos and pick some up.

I can't be arsed to hand wash it because I wear it ALL the time and I'm a bit lazy.

If I put in with the darks the lovely white stripes will go grey.

Surely if I put it in with the whites it will turn my white wash grey.

scissors You know 'wash dark colours separately'.

I feel your pain - I too am a Laundry Queen. This could keep me up worrying all night.

The colour won't run. My dc's have T-shirts with light and dark and if I want the lights to stay light they go in a light wash IYSWIM.

wash on a cooler wash than usual, maybe 30 degrees, with the whites. I have just done this with a brand new black and white t-shirt and it came out just fine. Best of luck!

I can't vouch for whether this works or not as have never tried by my mother has always sworn that salt (no idea how much) stops colour running. Worth a try I suppose.

Lawks · 26/02/2009 16:22

I'll try it in a low temp white wash then. But oh, it's not a black and white striped dress. It's a black dress with white stripes. I'll do it. [brave]

I'd wash the item alone in the washing machine.

CrackopentheBaileys · 26/02/2009 19:55

So how did it go then? Do you now have a lovely black and grey striped dress?!

christywhisty · 26/02/2009 20:02

use a colour catcher

MaryBS · 26/02/2009 20:05

Are you sure its not a white dress with black stripes?

moocowme · 27/02/2009 21:29

yes salt should work as this is what you wash just died clothes in the set the colour. you will need to put in a whole container of it tho.

pamplemousse · 27/02/2009 21:33

OMG how do you live without colour catchers? Want me to send you some?

Mspontipine · 27/02/2009 22:18

I hate things with white bits!! They spend their life at the bottom of my linen bin - ds's pjs with white sleeves etc. I put the awkward buggers all in together on a washing machine quick wash - uses tap temp only doesn't heat at all. Just before I turn boiler off so tap water is cold only. It does work amd stuff is clean.

I have no idea how others do it!!

MmeLindt · 27/02/2009 22:21

I have a green top with a white collar that has gone gray. Anyone know how to get it white again without the green going lighter.

OP
Don't put your dress in a dark wash.

purepurple · 28/02/2009 09:05

just wash it on it's own, it should be fine
