How do you get rid of the smell of smoke?

I'm hoping one of you gurus can help me.

I lent my sister lots of baby stuff, because she was expecting. At the time, she had said that she was only going to smoke outside the house.

Now, a year later, she has returned the items, and they stink of smoke

I am due DC3 in a few weeks time, but a few of the items are surface wash only, such as a baby gym, etc.

What can I do to remove the stench of cigarette smoke, when I can't actually do anything other than give them a wipe over with a damp cloth?

I am gutted, to be honest. She knows we don't smoke, and had explicity said that she didn't intend to smoke around her son, so although she smells of smoke alot, I didn't think of our stuff. Now I have smoke ridden stuff that my baby is going nowhere near unless I can get rid of the smell.

Fabreeze - and lots of fresh air. Wipe over plastic with dettol. Onions help to absorb smell say in a carry cot - and dont leave a smell either. So leave an onion in a for a couple of days and then use the fabreze and leave outside on a sunny day.

TBH she probably did smoke outside but the smell gets everywhere

Bicarbonate of soda helps to absorb smells, I'd sprinkle it liberally all over items you can't wash and then rinse with cool water and hand on the line.
TBH though I would put everything even surface wash only on a cool wash 30 deg or so and dry outside on in the dryer with a tumble dryer sheet.
How awful for you

Thank you - will give all of these a go and report back
