Would you recommend a combination washer/drier?

Currently I have my washing machine in the kitchen and my tumble drier in the conservatory as there isn't space for it in the kitchen. Ideally I'd prefer it not to be in there.

I'm hoping to have a new kitchen soon and am making plans. I wondered whether to get an integrated combination washer/drier to save space. Are they any good? Would you recommend getting one?

Thanks for any advice.

My mum has one and the wash is fine, but the tumbledry is usless. It might be ok for emergencies, but personally I wouldn't have one.I seem to remember a which report saying they are prone to break down as well.

subtlemouse · 24/02/2009 13:47

Nooooooooooooooooooooooo!

You can only do half loads of washing at a time, or else you have to take out half the wet load and refill later. They make a horrible noise and pump out steam.

(It's true the technology might have moved on since I had one 10 yrs ago, but I wouldn't touch one again.)

FrazzledFairyFay · 24/02/2009 13:48

Mine is, admittedly, quite old (about 7 years) and things may have moved on a bit but I never se the dryer part of it because it takes forever to dry anything. Itis so rubbish taht I have actually bought a vented dryer as well and use that instead, with the hose stuck out of an open window.

countesscaloriecounter · 24/02/2009 13:48

I don't think they're as good as seperate machines. I had a washer/dryer in the past and hated it. It seemed to take ages to dry the clothes. That was a few years back now though, and they might have got better since then.

partyfairy · 24/02/2009 13:48

'Tis true they are totally rubbish. Don't get one!

Iklboo · 24/02/2009 13:49

Nope - my mum had loads of problems with hers constantly breaking down. She finally got rid and got separates

Niftyblue · 24/02/2009 13:50

Have one at the moment
washing is fine
But the drying takes twice as long as normal
Would`nt have another one again

Buda · 24/02/2009 13:53

They are not great. Take forever to dry anything.

pud1 · 24/02/2009 13:55

DONT DO IT

they are rubbish. i have an intergrated washer dryer. cost me £900 about 4 years ago. has cost me an additional £300 on repairs. i done have a choice due to space.

sagacious · 24/02/2009 13:56

I have had 3 in 10 years (no space for seperates)

Costly to fix (currently having problems with a 13 month old zannussi)

Tumbledrying is rubbish (half load only takes 2hrs)

so

No !

Flower3545 · 24/02/2009 13:57

I've had one in the past, never again!

If you have more than one load your stuck waiting for the drying to be finished from your first load before you can begin your next load.

LadyOfWaffle · 24/02/2009 13:59

Not if you can help it. I have one (space issue) and hate the drying. I kept the tumble drier under the stairs so I can keep using it.

tessieb · 24/02/2009 14:00

I am so so glad I asked you all! I'll definately keep to separate machines then.

Thanks.

The clothes come out hot and steaming (so sort of damp) and very very creased. & it takes hours. If you can squeeze a tumble dryer in, I would.

WelliesAndPyjamas · 24/02/2009 14:03

No idea about their long term usefulness and reliability (so definitely listen to the previous posters) but I am currently using one in the place we are staying in and I have no problems with it. In fact, I really like the fact that it can go automatically from the end of the wash cycle in to the drying cycle so you can put the clothes in there dirty and they come out clean and dry!

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/02/2009 11:33

def buy washer and a dryer

combos never dry properly and also seem to smell damp

condenser tumble dryers are fab, and as you can have anywhere as only need to empty water try, you could have in living room/dining room and cover with a cloth and have as a small table

or in garage/shed if have electricty in them

purepurple · 28/02/2009 09:12

I have one as the only other option was to have a drier in the garage and
garage = spiders
but I don't use the drier very often as you can only dry half a load
and it always seems to smell
and my darks always seem to be covered in fluff
but it is great if you need to wash and dry something for work for the next day
I can put it on a 30 min wash which goes straight to drying and is ready by the time I have cooked tea! But not very economical that way
