I use asda own non bio powder and it is fine.

I was going to try smart price stuff but they don't have non bio

nailpolish · 13/02/2009 12:21

ah see i like bio

DanJARMouse · 13/02/2009 12:23

have used own brand bio but not value. fwiw it was fine.

crokky · 13/02/2009 12:24

are you cost cutting? if so, i have found that if i use less than a quarter of what it says on the bottle, everything still comes out clean (this is fairy non bio)

Pippinella · 13/02/2009 12:25

Its "ok" I guess - you can't complain for the price. It doesn't have much scent, which doesn't bother me too much as I use fabric conditioner.

I use a scoop of Vanish Oxy as well if there are lots of stains and it seems to work well.

I have tried both the tesco blue stripe and MMorrisson's yellow ranges.

TheThoughtPolice · 13/02/2009 12:28

I buy Ariel tablets which a re quite expensive but I also put a scoop of soda crystals in, so I only end up using half a dose of expensive tablets. Still smells nice and cleans brilliantly.

Soda crystals have the bonus of being eco friendly if that's your bag and v v cheap, about 65p for 1kg

here

pinkmook · 13/02/2009 12:29

Hi - I use asda basic washing powder and can't tell any difference (apart from the scent as pippinella says) so I buy asda basic fabric conditioner as well (at 47p a ltr) so I buy a large 3kg box and softener for about £2 and it can last up to a month for a family of 3.

HTH

TheThoughtPolice · 13/02/2009 12:29

Soda crystals are better as the oxy or Vanish branded stuff. They are what our grandmothers used to get their whites white !

nailpolish · 13/02/2009 12:31

yes i use asda oxy for stains - which we seem to have a lot of - and for white whites - so i wondered if i might as well use the smartprice powder with it

yes im cost cutting

couldnt believe how cheap the smartprice stuff was

i do tend to use less than they recommend on the box as we live in a soft water area

thanks every one

I swapped over a few months ago and now I always use value brand bio washing powder and fabric softener, have tried Asda and Sainsbury's version, no difference between the two, as far as I can see. It isn't quite as good as top branded stuff in a quick wash (which is the program I use as uses less electricity), so every so often I use the long program for a week just to spruce things up again. Occasionally need to use soda powder or vanish, but over all for the difference in price I doubt I shall ever pay op price for washing powder again - even when I do start earning a good wage again.
AFAIK, 1 kg = 65p, 3 kg = £1.67
1 ltr softener = 49p

Also sainsburys value baby bath is about 22p, I probably wouldn't use it for a baby's bath, but is great in mine and the childrens' and value soap, 14p for a pack of four bars - again it's great stuff, their basics potatoes are £1.49 for 5kg, and sainsburys value chocolate is delicious... (I am still finding my way around the value ranges of Asda, sains burys and tesco...)

nailpolish · 13/02/2009 12:46

asda george baby bath is the best baby bath i have ever used - smells lovley, makes great bubbles and is very kind to skin
i have tried loads - evne the pricey ones - but that is my fave adn its dead cheap

i migh t try soda crystals instead of the oxy

George shampoo for brunettes is good and smells divine.

GreenGables · 13/02/2009 12:48

if you live in a hard water area then you can add soda crystals to the machine to soften the water, so reducing the amount of detergent needed. I is also very good at clearing blocked drains and greasy hobs www.dripak.co.uk/

GreenGables · 13/02/2009 12:51

I haven't quite dared step over for shampoo and conditioner - I'll take the plunge next time I shop at asda

Metatron · 13/02/2009 12:51

tesco one v good np. Fine for sensitiveskin too.

ProfessorCalculus · 13/02/2009 12:53

I used Tesco blue stripe when I was a poor student and it was terrible. The clothes came out almost as dirty as when they went it. This was some time ago though so it might have improved since then.

nailpolish · 13/02/2009 12:54

eek i culdnt use value shampoo
esp on the dds or me - dh can use fairy liquid if he liks

cocolepew · 13/02/2009 12:55

Greengables I still use Tresemme conditioner but do reccommend the Asda shampoo.

Metatron · 13/02/2009 12:56

at cross posts PC.

TheThoughtPolice · 13/02/2009 12:58

The Treseme bottles are so huge and so cheao that tbh, i imagine that the value ranges don't really save you that much, They always seem to be on BOGOF too. The Trseme hair serum is brilliant.

SammyK · 13/02/2009 13:01

I buy asda's smartprice fabric softener and washing powder too, always feel very smug at the saving, and not noticed any difference.

nailpolish · 13/02/2009 13:03

i have never used fbric conditioner
is it really good? does it make a difference? what about towels? dhs aunt uses it and when you stay at hers and have a shower the towl has no absobency and you are basically distributing the water over you and not drying anything
does my head in

OP posts:
TheThoughtPolice · 13/02/2009 13:06

I use fabric conditioner but not on towels, like you say it buggers up the aborbency

nailpolish · 13/02/2009 13:09

im a buit wary of using liuids in my machine as ages when i used the ariel liqid dhs shirts caught fire inside th drum i couldnt get the door open but when i eventually did i had to hose the inside of the drum - all the clothes were burnt to a cinder!!
washing machine man siad it was because the liquid had blocked the water wipe - the machine had heated up but cos there was no water to heat the clothes caught fire

scary

I used tesco value bio powder. I only used it on whites and towells though as I washed my bedding and missed a pillow case which went through with the colours and colour difference was huge. The T.V had really dulled the colour. On whites though its great mixed with soda crystals. I only used half of what it said too. I also found the smell really nice.
