Storing hats and gloves etc. What do you tidy people do?

Because all of ours have ended up in either a heap at the bottom of our under-stairs cupboard, all odd gloved or alternatively hanging in a bag from a coat cook and still all odd pairs of gloves!
Any solutions?

Good question.
I want to ask the tidy people what they do (other than tidy up), I can't imagine having a tidy house and time for anything else.
I'll lurk.

FuriousGeorge · 10/02/2009 22:27

I'm not a tidy person, but ours live in a basket on the hall table.

Tommy · 10/02/2009 22:27

I'm not tidy but thought I was making an effort having put them all in a bag and hanging them off a hook....

gloves always get lost. I bought a lot of pairs very cheap in Tesco this year or I make DS1 and 2 out them in their pockets. DS3 doesn't have pockets but then, to be fair, always pulls his gloves off anyway.

I have a pillowcase with an old piece of material through the top hanging in the hall cupboard. There is a gap in the side, at the top so it doesn't have to be taken down each time and it hangs low enough for the children to put their own bits away.

littleboyblue · 10/02/2009 22:28

I just keep gloves in coat pockets. One in each. But then we all only have one pair of gloves for one pair of hands....

callmeovercautious · 10/02/2009 22:28

I put up a hook in our cupboard and hung a bag on it, shove it all in and close the door But there are only 3 of us so it works OK. Currently wearing items are left in coat pockets (scarves down the arm of the coat).

I am not tidy by nature but all the DD clutter has pushed me over the edge. I also have a hook and bag in the tall kitchen cupboard that I keep the re-usable shopping bags in - it has been a revalation - no more carrier bags everywhere

expatinscotland · 10/02/2009 22:29

I got a shoe holder that goes over the door, the plastic sort.

I hung it over the front door.

Hats and gloves do in there, and best of all, we can take it with us when we go (we are private renters).

Other alternative would be to designate them a hook, with their photo over it so they know who is how, and a drawstring back for their kit.

Another hook or two for their jackets.

I am not a tidy person but needed the older boys to be more independent this winter so we have a basket each in the hallway and all our gloves, hats etc go in our own basket.

bracingair · 10/02/2009 22:31

ikea sell something for teddies that hang off a hook so i hang that up in the coat cupboard and there is a difference section for each member of the family. The kids have their gloves ties on to their coats with clip from jojomamanbebe

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 10/02/2009 22:32

Basket in the hall way here too.

We're not tidy people but it helps.

aGalChangedHerName · 10/02/2009 22:33

Gloves in pockets and hats and scarfs in coat sleeves so they don't get lost. So we only have to hang coats up.

Have a sports bag with spares in it tho.

callmeovercautious · 10/02/2009 22:33

I love the shoe holder idea expat I have shoes that need organising too - how many can a half door hold though?

MaureenMLove · 10/02/2009 22:33

I have a ratan box in the porch, with various gloves, hats, scarfs (and a pair of PC speakers) in it!

frumpygrumpy · 10/02/2009 22:35

Baskets here too. IKEA ones, one for each child and kept in the cupboard. We manage to stuff in a couple of hats and gloves and usually sunglasses too.

WriggleJiggle · 10/02/2009 22:38

I have mine on a mini washing line on the side of the show rack - simple enough for toddlers to undo and rehang themselves, Big wooden pegs are great.

charlieandlola · 10/02/2009 22:38

Sock dividers in drawers ( if they make it out of coat pockets)

pavlovthecat · 10/02/2009 22:45

this is good, but maybe not big enough for you?

Timeisablindguide · 10/02/2009 22:52

I also keep hats and gloves in coat pockets and scarves on each member of the family's coat peg and then it can all be grabbed quickly on our mad dash out of the door. Also keep spare woollies in the car in those behind-the-seat hanging thingummijigs.

I like expat's and pavlovs suggestions. Now if I could just get the boys to come home from school with all their accoutrements......

we have two shelves in cupboard with baskets labeled with each persons name . The children have a picture on theirs, it seems to work well.

wheesht · 12/02/2009 00:05

Each of our girls keep their own hats/gloves/scarves in a drawer in their room. Saves them all being downstairs.

i have six kids and a basket!

PatienceRequired · 12/02/2009 16:51

Basket here too! On the hall floor under the coat rack so it sits nicely without intruding into hall to much IYKWIM. We all chuck our winter gubbings in there and then come summer it will be full of sun hats etc.

Only bought it in November and it is a god send! Before that gloves etc were just wherever they landed.
