How often do you clean your house?

Be honest, I clean every week, my DH thinks I clean too much and I am insane. I think once per week is normal, he was a student (dirty creatures LOL) and I think his standards are fairly low TBH. What do you do?

What do you mean by "clean" ?

ComeWhineWithMe · 10/02/2009 12:23

I have a general tidy round most days but a massive clean at least once a week .

DP is more tidy than me he cleans the kitchen every morning before he goes to work even though I tell him not to .

georgiemum · 10/02/2009 12:23

A good scrub once a week - bits and bobs every day (we live in London and we get the dreaded 'sticky dirt').

MrsSeanBeanIsEmployable · 10/02/2009 12:24

Pick up bits/ general wipe as I go (have cloth attached at all times ), major job once per week.

pavlovthecat · 10/02/2009 12:26

kitchen, probably twice a week, hoover couple times a week, thorough clean and tidy of everything/change bedding etc etc, once a week/as and when it needs it (whatever is the most, ie minimum once a week). Tidy/keep on top of things daily.

2pt4kids · 10/02/2009 12:26

Feels like all the time.
I have to clean the kitchen every day due to kids mess.
Big clean probably once a week (or a bit a day over a week meaning most jobs get done once a week iyswim)

idobelieveinfairies · 10/02/2009 12:27

Everyday...clean kitchen worktops, kitchen floor, bathroom floors, tolilets, wash basins, hoover, make beds, do washing, clean out litter tray.

Twice a week...ironing.

Weekly..dust, change all bedding, hoover bedrooms and hallways.

Monthly..hoover under couches/beds, windows.

I think that is it!

rolandbrowning · 10/02/2009 12:28

I tend to try and do a bit every day, as well as washing, dishwasher, looking after ds, shopping, cooking etc. I don't have enough time to keep everything as clean as I would like though.

ABetaDad · 10/02/2009 12:28

Once a week top to botom and then a really really thorough going over - takes about 6 hours once every quarter.

ohdearwhatamess · 10/02/2009 12:32

A big clean downstairs (skirting boards, nooks and crannies, cobwebs etc) once a week, usually the day before friends come round.

Vacuum downstairs most days - dog hair, mud gets everywhere.

Clean kitchen most days.

Clean and vacuum upstairs and bathrooms once a week.

I don't think once a week is very much. RL friends seem to do the whole house every day and have everything permanently spotless.

peachface · 10/02/2009 12:40

Everyday - kitchen: floor, surfaces etc

  • bathrooms: floors,toilets, basins, bath/shower
  • floors get cleaned downstairs - playroom and kitchen (laminate), hoover lounge (always seems to get so bitty!)

once a week - each bedroom gets a really good clean, new bedding on beds, clean downstairs windows, do all dusting and rest of hoovering

monthly - thorough clean behind any furniture that doesn't get moved with the daily hoover

Easier to do something each day to keep on top of it and then when you do a bigger clean it isn't such a mammoth task

nickytwotimes · 10/02/2009 12:44

Tidy as we go.
Dishes after every meal.
Washing constantly.
Ironing twice a week.
Bathroom once a week thouroughly, and roughly twice.
Floors mopped once a week, vacuumed every 2-3 days, depending.
Dust each room once a week.
Sheets once a week, towels twice.

Once a week I have a cleaner for four hours - ironing, hoovering upstairs and down, change beds, damp dust and polish.

I hoover/mop 2 x a week downstairs on top of that.

Constant battle to keep kitchen clean and tidy.

Washing machine is on most days. Ironing is done when the mound gets too big for me to ignore.

Once a week is bare minimum I would think.

newpup · 10/02/2009 13:28

I clean throughly once a week - Clean bathrooms and kitchen, hoover and dust throughout, change bedlinen and towels, wash floors.

Every day - hoover (have a puppy and a cat so lots of fur) Wipe down kitchen sides with dettol. Wash, dry put away clothes

Twice a week - iron

Seasonal - in the hot summer months (ha ha) change the bedlinen and towels more often.

Occasional jobs, as and when - cleaning out cupboards, clean doors and skirting boards, clean windows, hoover curtains, wash china and crystal on dresser, sort toys in playroom, shake out clothes and hoover wardrobe ( to avoid the moths).

newpup · 10/02/2009 13:29

Forgot about emptying and unloading dishwasher - constant

yomellamoHelly · 10/02/2009 14:06

Clean bath and sink every day
Wipe down bathroom tiles and clean loo every few days
Clean highchair every day
Tidy toys away every day
Hoover downstairs carpets every day
Mop kitchen floor every day
Mop dining room floor every other day
Mop stairs once a week
Sweep upstairs carpets once a week
Change sheets once a week
Change towels every few days
Washing, folding and ironing constantly
Washing up and wipe down of surfaces at beginning and end of day
Rubbish and bins as required
Dusting once a week (but a bit lax on this)
One room a week for a "proper" clean (dust, move furniture, hoover, wipe down knick-knacks etc)

This house can fly out of control very easily and then it's hard to get back on top of it. Find it particularly hard when people stay and the amount of work created increases.

sazzleevans · 10/02/2009 21:54

I have 3 dogs so have to keep on top of things. Just bought a roomba so its got a bit easier.

Hoover house once a day.
Map all downstairs once a day.
Each day i focus on a different task;

Monday is easy day just making sure laundry basket is totally empty and clean baathroom.

Tuesday i dust the hall, staits and landing.

Wednesday i dust the lounge

Thursday i clean bathroom

Friday i do kitchen, strip beds and wash all bedding and towels etc.

Saturday/Sun keep on top of things.

Each morning i also clean units in the kitchen, wash fronts of kitchen bins etc.

Of course i do washing as it comes along and fill and empty dishwasher etc all the time.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 10/02/2009 22:00

That's a really good idea as far as one cleaning project a day. I tend to go out and see friends/take kids out and do cleaning stuff in a day. (mil does the ironing!)

(aside from the laundry of which I do about 2 loads a day)

LuckySalem · 10/02/2009 22:02

I tend to do the dishwasher, hoover the living room, brush the kitchen floor and wipe the sides everyday - I also pick one room each day to tidy up - I do this in the evening after DD has gone to bed and still have plenty of time to relax before I go to bed.

Then once a week I do laundry.

beanieb · 10/02/2009 22:03

I am learning to tidy as I go, so I do a bit every night after work and I also do a quick de-clutter in the main rooms every morning. Never used to - I would leave it all for a couple of weeks and then have a mass clean up at the weekends which was a pain in the arse as it meant I was running about like crazy when I should be relaxing.

solidgoldbullet4myvalentine · 10/02/2009 22:04

Not often. I wash up about every other day, do a load of laundry every couple of days, otherwise I only bother when things start to look a right mess, or if visitors are expected. Before I had DS I could get away with only washing up once a week.
Housework is mostly a waste of time. I have no idea why people clean things that don't actually look dirty yet.

hf128219 · 10/02/2009 22:04

Cleaner comes every day for 3 hours - lucky me!

banjaxed · 10/02/2009 22:08

Hmmm. I seem to be a minger.

Find work gets in the way big time (I teach, so work most evenings too) and need some down time as well as DD play time.

My house gets cleaned when we lose the ability to ignore it any longer....

Kitchen kept reasonable. Shower cleaned once a week. Hoovering when DD starts picking stuff up and asking if she can eat it

Othersideofthechannel · 10/02/2009 22:10

Thank goodness for your post solidgoldbullet. I was beginning to feel inadequate

I think once a week is about right but time flies by so quickly I often realise it's at least two weeks since certain parts of the house were last cleaned.
