Please explain how you use the insert for the oven that goes under this name. As a baking tray, as something to stop the lower contents burning, or what. Please explain your understanding of this bit of equipment.

Thanks.

My understanding is that it reduces the temperature of the oven underneath the cold shelf..so if you are doing spongecakes etc you would put them in under the cold shelf.

It is defo not a baking tray!

Agree with Bystander. If you are doing e.g. a sponge cake that is browning too quickly on top, then pop the cold tray above it.

Thanks guys,

One of my Rayburn cookbooks says to use it as a baking tray for biscuits scones etc. I don't use it that way, but can see that you could.

And i know that it should prevent burning, but i thought i read somewhere that it reduces the temperature by a particular amount. In the same way using the higher or lower runners will. 10 degrees up or down.

Did i dream it?

I have a solid fuel Rayburn, and after two years i still find it difficult to control the temperature sometimes.
