How do i get these clean?

After some messy building work i have a filthy fabric armchair (not removable covers) and very dirty net curtains.

How do i get these sparkly again? I've not had nets long, so i'm a net cleaning virgin. I've looked in Sainsbury and Tescos for something not found anything.

Help me get them clean with out ruining them please!!

You can definitely buy a product for getting net curtains white - ask in a hardware store.

Look in yellow pages for an upholstery cleaner who will come to your house to clean your armchair.

can't afford upholstery cleaner i'm afraid- needs to be a DIY job.

Apparently denture cleaners are good for nets- so Kim and Aggie say.

Do you have a steamer? I use our hand held steamer to clean the arms of our sofa.... I think I got it much cheaper than that, probably from Argos. We've had it for years but it is good.

Steradent tablets (yes, for teeth!)are supposed to be good. Not done it myself, so don't want to be reponsible for ruining your nets (!) but read somewhere that it's much cheaper than other things you can buy and just as effective - pop a couple in water and leave nets in there for a while to restore whiteness!

sorry, I was typing my post when staryeyed had already posted the same! oops! Joys of being interrupted constantly by small children!!

GoodGrrrl · 08/02/2009 13:08

right, got some steradent. So, hot or cold water?

whichever it says to dissolve them in I would have thought

I just bang my nets in teh washer wih biological powder on a 60 degree wash then hang them back up wet...

mowbraygirl · 08/02/2009 18:57

Soak curtains if possible in biological powder then put in washing machine I do a 40 degree wash and then as ilove says take out and hang up damp any creases come out and they dry quite quickly. Have you tried upholstery shampoo for the chair I usualy use a 1001 spray seems to get things quite clean.

GoodGrrrl · 10/02/2009 11:11

well the nets look good- although i was unnerved when the tablets turned the water pink. Armchair next...

I have had some success using bicarb. or cornflour on upholstery. What I do is damp down the affected section very slightly and then work in some bicarb. or cornflour. Allow it to dry. Then hoover off the residue and some of the dirt will come off. I've just done this on my sofas where people's shoe heels mark them, and where newspapers are rested on the arms.

nickschick · 10/02/2009 11:26

I use washing liquid (ariel or whatever) and gently sponge/scrub at the fabric then with a spatula i push at the fabric dragging it along to bring out the dirt nd soapy water i do this for a while drying on an old towel as i go - its quite succesful but can take awhile.

1001 carpet cleaner is very good too.

Glo White do a good net curtain whitener - can be bought in most supermarkets (and some DIY places too) I think! There are usually quite a few whitening products all together in the washing powder aisle, usually near the Vanish and such.
