Gert blackout blinds in a neutral colour and then plain unlined curtains - that will save you money.

We got all our blackout blinds from John Lewis but Next do them to order too - the JL ones you can cut down.

How about putting a blackout roller blind behind ordinary curtains? We've done this and it works really well. I have one from Dunelm which is fab and one from Argos which is crap.

FAQtothefuture · 06/02/2009 10:02

or you could buy some black out material and make your own - that's what we did for DS1 when he was waking stupidly early when he was younger. Got it off the man on the market dead cheap,.

Seeline · 06/02/2009 10:02

We just got black out linings, which clip to any curtains using teh curtain hooks. You do need to make sure the curtain rail is really secure though as they are quite heavy Ours came from Mothercare I think.

as silly as i sound i cant make curtains! plus i dont have the time. also we live in a new build and have oddvents which have to stay open and odd shape around the window and we have had to take his current VERY expensive blackout blind down. also i will be putting voike up as we are quite over looked and wont have 'bare' windows during the day.....

oh I didn't make curtains, I just bought the material, sewed a little hem at the top, threaded some of that stuff you use to have net curtains through it and hung it behind where the curtains hung

piratecat · 06/02/2009 10:13

i got mine from mothercare yrs back.

they were very long tho, prob easy to trim?

piratecat · 06/02/2009 10:14

faq that sounsd much easier!

the ones i got were very complicated to attach to the original curtains. dd was only about 5 weeks old and i had little to no patience or concentration.

oh it was easy even for a complete non-sewer like me

Timeisablindguide · 11/02/2009 22:39

Dunelm Mill sell really inexpensive blackout linings to go behind any curtains, that's where I got my ds's ones from.

Ella23 · 08/03/2009 21:31

an alternative to blackout blinds can be found at www.magicblackout.co.uk

SlightlyMadScotland · 08/03/2009 21:35

You can buy blackout curtain lniers from Dunhelm mill.

You just hang them on teh same hooks as the curtains. no sewing. No drilling. No nothing.

Dead easy.

After a thread earlier in the week I ordered some from the Great Little Trading Company. They wre in the sale and were already lined with black out material. Can't tell you what they are like though as they haven't arrived yet!
