My Dad decided to clear the loft and presented me with my Tiny Tears doll circa 1980 - plus a suitacse full of woollen clothes my Granny knitted for it.

Have washed them on hand wash/30 degrees and didnt want them all to fall apart - with double softner and they still smell.

Dont really want to get rid of them - a bit sentimental you know

What can I try now?

Thanks

Let 'em smell of loft, it adds to the nostalgia. If you have small children to play with them they'll be even more fascinated because of the old smell. There can't be any germs or anything on them now they've been washed - enjoy the vintage sensory experience!

You probably just need to let them air for a good while. Maybe sprinke them with bicarb?

Actually, now I think about it - if you want them to last rather than be played with, I would wash them again but with no powder or softener. Those strong chemicals aren't good for fabrics long term. When the smell has gone store them wrapped in acid free tissue, which you can get in the post office.

Get an empty washing powder box, where it's loose powder, not shrink wrapped tablets.

Put items in there for a week or two, and the smell should go.
