OK: firstly let me apologise in advance to everyone who is thinking this is a daft thing to ask. I have my reasons.

Any ideas gratefully received. TIA.

Carve wood?

I was wondering if you had muddled up your question.

I am intrigued now.

Put it in the dishwasher on a hot wash. DH tells me off for putting the best knives in there because it blunts them

hobbgoblin · 03/02/2009 17:04

Give it to me for 5 mins? All my kitchen knives seem to be blunt.

TrillianAstra · 03/02/2009 17:04

Glass chopping boards. Horrible things. What are they for, if not blunting knives?

cut through a cardboard box
try cutting some branches off your nearest tree

NorktasticNinja · 03/02/2009 17:05

Use it to cut paper/card. 'tis lethal for scissors anyway...

Use a steel to sharpen it but do it wrong. Always works on mine, they end up like butterknives rather than all sharpy like they were supposed to be.

I have a knife phobia. I am not sure that phobia is the correct term actually; as I believe that many phobias are of things which cannot literally harm you - like buttons and clowns for example.

People always ask how I manage to cook and well meaning friends always kindly explain that sharper knives are safer, which I am sure is strictly true, but I manage OK. And my single small kitchen knife is so blunt that even when it slips it still does no damage.

Miraculously it still cuts through swede etc quite nicley. But as eventaully happens, it is wearing out. I have such trouble replacing them. Last time DS bought the cheapest he could (reasoning that the sharpness/ quality would be lower) and I sawed concrete with it whilst wearing heavy duty gardening gloves. It made an awful noise though. Thanks for the suggestions. I am a loon aren't I?!

I buy knives from a German brand that also sells a knife sharpener. And I sharpen them regularly.

BonsoirAnna · 03/02/2009 17:29

Sorry, that was most unclear. I meant - knives blunt all the time by themselves, don't they?

alarkaspree · 03/02/2009 17:31

Use them to open a tin of tomatoes, because you can't be bothered to look for the tin opener. Thanks dh.

thumbwitch · 03/02/2009 18:04

lol Anna - I think you have got the wrong end of the stick!

TrillianAstra · 04/02/2009 08:39

So blunt that when it slips (because it won't cut things properly) it doesn't do any harm anyway? That's really blunt. You must have really strong arms - I can't cut through swede with a sharp knife!

Shouldn't DH do that for you, if you're scared of knives?

It's a phobia if it's irrational or out of proportion and stops you living your life in a normal way, it doesn't matter if the thing could technically hurt you or not.
