How to get rid of persistent BO from a top?

TheYearOfTheCat · 30/01/2009 19:21

I have a favourite top for work - the only thing, it seems to be impregnated with BO. Within an hour or 2 of wearing it clean from the laundry, it really whiffs. It is black jersey material, so I can't bleach it.

Does anyone know how to combat this, or is it destined for the bin?

Note: I am not a slattern. I am very clean, use deoderant, and wash my clothes regularly.

Have you tried soaking in as hot water as it'll stand diluted with Soda Crystals (from supermarkets/wilkos and dirt cheap).

They have worked a treat for me.

stain remover sometimes works...

I slosh some white vinegar (the stuff for cleaning not eating) on the inside-armpit are of my tops that can only be washed at 30°C .. Washing clothes at 30°c doesn't kill the bacteria which causes the whiff iyswim.... but white vinegar seems to do the trick ...it works particularly well on white tops ....don't know about black though ...

Is it a natural fibre or not (as synthetics do tend to whiff more)?

I second the vinegar tip. I always slosh some on the armpits of DH's shirts now - leave for 15mins and wash as normal. Sometimes I put Napisan in the wash too.

I've only used on shirts so far - various colours. Not sure if it would be OK on all fabrics.

BTW, when you say for cleaning not eating CTGH, what do you mean?

The only white vinegar I have ever been able to get is distilled malt vinegar. Is this the wrong one? If so, where would you get vinegar just for cleaning? (mind you, the type I use always seems to do the trick!)

Hi Servalan - I live abroad (continental Europe) where white vinegar is readily available among all the cleaning products at the supermarket. It is totally clear - looks like water or vodka - and is very cheap ...comes in plastic 1.5 litre bottles ... it's great for cleaning tiles, decalcifying kettles and cleaning stains off baths/clothing etc ...

Sorry - is it not available in UK? I've been over here so long I've forgotten ..??? Apologies if not ...

Thanks all

Thanks CTGH - I've never seen it amongst the cleaning products in the supermarkets.

The stuff I get is clear like water, but I get it from the food section - I think the kind of vinegar I have been using is usually used for pickling things.

I wish I could get large 1.5 litre bottles of white vinegar. I have to buy several small bottles of vinegar at a time, and have a load lined up in my cleaning cupboard. I use them for getting limescale off taps and out of the kettle (and of course for de-whiffing DH's shirts )

Good luck with your top YOTC - let us know what works!!
