fetid loo problem

we live in a rented house and the downstairs loo, despite daily bleaching, smells like a men's urinal in a garage. I have been on and on to the landlord, but he will not replace anything, and I feel so embarrassed everytime anyone comes around. do you think that men's misaiming could have gone down onto the lino and tiles and between the cracks and that is why the smell won't go? Any tips?

Poor you, awful smell especially when strangers are responsible!!! Can you lift the lino, or because its rented you are not allowed to.The only way I can think of getting rid of the smell is to lift the lino, keep it though you can always put it back when you move (YUK Wear double strength industrial gloves)Then depending on whats underneath clean dry and venilate.

MuchLessTiredNow · 29/01/2009 13:12

great name! I have tried to lift the lino, but it is really old and I think I will break it if I do any more. Do you think I can bathe the floor in bleach and leave it to try and soak down overnight?

Bleach
Disinfectant
Febreze
Scrubbing brush
Gallons of hot water
Peg for your nose

In industrial quantities!

moshie · 30/01/2009 13:44

I wouldn't use bleach, it smells of ammonia just like wee. use disinfectant, at least it's a clean smell.

mowbraygirl · 30/01/2009 16:53

I agree with Moshie I wouldn't use bleach as it may be making the smell worse use plenty of hot water and disinfectant. Have you tried Neutradol Gel in a white tub it seems to work by neutralising the smells. Just place it on a window sill or even on top of cistern.

DesperateHousewifeToo · 30/01/2009 17:07

We had a problem with this.

I used bleach to scrub all the loo. Check all the nooks and crannies at the back and sides, inside and out. Also on any surrounding wall tiles.

I used carpet cleaner around surrounding carpet.

Daily spraying carpet and around loo with febreze

Toilet duck rim liquid with odour eliminator

Mat to go under the loo which is changed and washed regularly. I hate these but figured it would catch any more stray drops and cover any smell coming from the floor.

Took a couple of weeks doing all the above and is fine now, without changing the flooring.

MuchLessTiredNow · 31/01/2009 19:19

well, I've just scrubbed every inch of the bloody thing - walls, floor etc to within an inch of its life so I really hope that will help, although I am not convinced.... I read the 'don't use bleach' post after I had done it - and my eyes are now streaming!!!

do you have a wooden loo seat? we do and wee bounces from the side of the toilet onto it and it pongs. we should really get a new one, but i pretend that scrubbing hard at the underside when i clean the toilet will get rid of the smell. gross though.

MuchLessTiredNow · 01/02/2009 17:02

no, just a bog (excuse pun!) standard plastic one. It seems a little better today, I guess if I keep attacking it, it will help.

My big sister cleaned my dad's toilet the other day which has smelt pretty much since they bought the house over 15 yrs ago. They have lino which is cut to come up the base of the toilet so I figured that's where the smell was coming from - but she just got some rubber gloves and a cloth and cleaned under the rim of the toilet. Bleurgh - i have never done this to my own toilet. But it worked and actually smells quite nice in their now.

bosch · 01/02/2009 22:19

Excuuuuuuuuse me for the 'their'

MuchLessTiredNow · 02/02/2009 09:18

I've just done it all over again and the rim as well again and it doesn't exactly smell nice yet, but is at the stage where an airfreshener in there might be able to help.

This what I hang in the loo rather than an air freshner.

It makes a huge difference in our loo and I can always tell with my nose when it has run out.

MuchLessTiredNow · 06/02/2009 18:50

thanks - I've just been out to buy one. Dh has just told me after I was wittering on that last friday when we had some people round, he went to the loo and found the whole floor swimming in pee - am that someone would do that and not even try to clean it up. No wonder the whole place has been smelling so evil. Have attacked it again tonight with disinfectant, and although it's not great, it is much better than last week

Hope the duck works.

It's horrible when you cringe when people want to use the loo and you know it wont be a nice experience.

I think some adults are worse that my ds at 'aiming' [ewwww emoticon]
