Would i have to get the oven. Managed to get the racks back to the original silver. Little bit of burnt on stuff left. Awkward little feckers. And am currently trying to de-ming the bottom. The thing is I don't think I'll get it back to its original glory. I can't afford to get the oven cleaner guys in so what standards would you all expect? Don't want the new people to think we scabby dirty people!!!

It's supposed to be clean to the standard it was when you moved in.

If it was brand new when you moved in, that's going to be a challenge.

Was the house professionally cleaned before you moved in? if so, you'd be expected to have it professionally cleaned on the way out.

My tennant moved out recently leaving food stuck in the oven, I had it professionally cleaned and it was agreed to take the money for that from her deposit. - be careful how much you need your deposit back.

Oh feck! It was a new oven! Maybe if I use some barbeque clening tools on the racks for the stubborn bits and get some hardcore oven cleaner from a mate who works in catering? Damn my slovenly ways!

We moved out of a rented property a few years ago and we got our three bed house professionally cleaned, it was worth it for the carpets, oven and bathroom alone!

It's worth paying out for it as if you do it yourself and it's not done right then the agents CAN charge you for having a full clean done. At least this way there should be no risk of you losing your deposit.

Just make sure you get a receipt from the company that does the work as proof. I was 3 months pregnant with DS2 and couldn't decorate the house we bought AND clean the old rented one before we moved. Money well spent IMHO!

You will never get it to look brand new - it isn't. The landlord can't expect you to either. Shelter has some good advice about this stuff here.

When we moved out of our last place we had never rarely cleaned the oven so I was really worried too (and would expect to pay had we left it in that state) but this brought it up lovely! (I was pregnant at the time so DP had to do it - win-win situation )

We really can't afford a proffesional clean. On reflection though when we moved in the place definatley hadn't been proffesionally done. The bathrooms were horrid and the grill pan had moldy bacon on it!!

Mr Muscle oven cleaner is v good but I make sure I follow all the instructions to the letter especially re ventilation and protection to hands and rubber seals.

A bit of elbow grease, the best/most expensive scourer you can get and Cilit Bang on the racks generally works.

Other than that there are professional oven cleaners in the Yellow Pages, maybe worth ringing for a quote cos if your landlord/lady charges you from deposit it could be top whack and twice the price of getting an over cleaner in yourself.

For future ref, Lakeland sell oven liners which you place at the bottom of the oven and they catch all the food that would otherwise get burnt to the bottom (and stink) The liners are non-stick so every so often you just flick off all those bits of melted pizza cheese/drips from meat etc and the oven stays A LOT cleaner.

That Oven Pride stuff is brilliant, I always use it now.

Ew sirius, that's gross!! When you moved in you should have had an inventory which should state the condition of all furniture/ appliances anything else relevant.

You only need to leave it in the state it was in as listed on that document.

We had the professional clean done as it was in our contract that we had to get the carpets cleaned on moving out, it was only a little bit more for the entire house to be cleaned so we did.

sweetgrapes · 26/01/2009 19:03

If it wasn't clean when you came in then the landlord probably isn't bothered much unless it's walking off on it's own!!

How long have you been there? I was at my place for 3 years and when we left they just chucked everything and replaced it with new! After I spent such a long time scrubbing it! No professional cleaning though. Also, the landlord used to get the carpets cleaned once a year so we weren't required to do that either.
Normal wear and tear was fine. Just nothing obviously dirty.
