If you have a wood / multifuel burner, what fuel do you use?

At the moment Im using bought logs and coal and use both at the same time, but im thinking of ditching the coal (getting expensive) and just burning wood.

Do you find your burner gives off the same heat if you just use wood?

Do you buy your logs or source them free?

Just intrested thats all?

We have an open fire but its multi fuel I guess!
Wood gives more flames, coal is much hotter. Coal is expensive per sack but sacks of wood is much more expensive for the same duration of heat iyswim.

We buy our logs - apart from sticks that the kids bring home from walks which are only good for kindling, and our xmas tree I am not sure where you suggest people source them for free without taking someone elses wood? Or do you have a friend with a forest

Thanks FJ, my DB has moved into a house thats surrounded by agricultural land and has struck up a deal with the farmer so that if he keeps a couple of fishing pits/pond areas clear (trouble with the local yokle kids leaving beer can and litter) and he can help himself to dead wood thats fallen or trees that have died and are falling over so I might be able to have some of that occasionally.

Also people give away old fencing etc.
Just wondering if anyone else just uses wood and if it gives out enough heat...guess I will just have to try it

We had coal fires for years & then had wood-burning stoves fitted (actually they're multi-fuel but we only use wood in them ).

The stoves throw out loads of heat - more than the coal fires did, though you do have the difference between the open fire & the closed stove to take into account.

I'd say give it a try - I've never had any complaints about the wood-burners not giving out enough heat - rather the reverse at times

We use just wood and it's great - lots of heat, although we do have heating too as a back up and for upstairs. You can also compost the ash if it's only wood ash.

We buy a load of logs every 6 months from a guy who works locally, and collect kindling ourselves. There are also quite often people who will offer you free wood to take away if they're having a tree felled, but it needs to be stored for a year to season it (or longer, depends on the type of wood).

After years of firelighters, we are also recent converts to starting fires with newspaper which is brilliant - I can't believe we wasted money on firelighters for so long!

Thanks for that, well this afternoon, I spent about an hour sawing up wood and set a fire in the burner using newspaper, kindling and small logs.
Thinking as I had cut lots of wood (about a potato sack) I thought it would last quite a while.
I set the fire at about 5pm and its still going, it became pretty hot after an hour or so so I shut the slider to half way (sorry dont know proper name for it) but the wood certainly burns very fast, nearly used the whole sack!
It wasnt very big individual pieces I admit, but at this rate Im going to need a heck of a lot of wood and will have biceps like Magnus Ver Magnusson!
