Daily cleaning rota or one big weekly blitz?

dairymoo · 23/01/2009 20:19

I have just got rid of my cleaner as she was pretty rubbish and I hope think I have enough time to do it myself now.

I like the idea of having a big blitz as I love the feeling of a clean house when everything is perfect, but how many people actually find this realistic?

I should add that I have 17mo DTs who are pretty full-on but do sleep reliably from about 12-2 everyday.

What do you do and does it work? Thanks!

A bit every day. If my upstairs is presentable, the downstairs is not so good and vice versa. It can be tidy, beds made etc. but not hoovered, bathroom cleaned etc.

I would only work for about half of that nap time. For the other hour I would sit down with a magazine and a coffee

Agree with CA.
A bit every day makes life easier. ALso, only half of nap time - you need a break.

we both work no cleaner one 3yo.

daily:
superficial tidying
kitchen
laundry
loos

weekly:
sheets
bathroom
more intense tidying
ironing
hoovering
windows
polishing / wiping

dh does kitchen cleaning and hanging up / putting away washing. i sort and put on washing, cook, tidy and do ds bedtime. i do more of the weekly stuff.

I find it best to d a little at a time. If you leave it all until the house is a real pit you will be so depressed and overwhelmed by it that you won't be able to get started.

Also tidying/ cleaning up as you go makes it easier.

when single and owner of my life time I used to do weekly blitz. now with two dd under 4 I think small bits everyday are more realistic and don't kill you. also if you for whatever reason are unable to do one day it's not the end of the world.

don;t take my word for it as I hate housework and I'll never be good at it.

Thanks for the replies - I do think that perhaps a little bit every day during nap time is best, and it means that my time spent reading a magazine or on MN in the second half of the nap is well earned .

I was kind of hoping that my DDs might want to 'help' me clean and follow me around with a mini brush sweeping the floor but that game lasted precisely 45 secs before I was demanded to read Dear Zoo again .

Also used to blitz once a week. Was also the big benefit of having a cleaner. House looked properly clean for a few hours. Never lasted very long though.
Dh and I now spend an hour most days clearing (so washing up, moving the washing on, cleaning the bath and sink out, cat-licking the downstairs floors, emptying rubbish etc.). On top of this I do 1 cleaning job (dining room floor, toilet, changing sheets, cleaning fireplace etc....). I find a little a day smoothes out the chaos that 2 children bring. It's never perfect, but it will do and because it's done regularly it doesn't require too much thought. I suppose everyone finds what works for them in the end.
As lots of people will probably say I've found Flylady really useful.

dairymoo when my dd1 helps me swip the floor she goes for the neat pile of rubbish I put aside and evenly spreads everywhere! that's why when I tidy up she's normally either at nursery or glued to peppa pig.

for the last few weeks i had been doing bits every day (i am a childminder and work from home and i have a busy house every day). this week i let it slip. i have spent hours and hours today getting it back in order and I had to farm my DS of 4.3 off to a friend of mine.

i was depressed and miserable. now, as i am nearly finished, i am depressed miserable and tired.

Definitely go for little bits often.
