Laundry - all one day a week or daily load?

Which is better? I think this only applies to SAHMs really as working mums not really time to do it all in one day.

I have usually done washing as and when but get fed up with piles of clothes around all the time etc.

I let it pile up recently due to illness and spent 9.30 to 2.30 on Monday basically doing 8 days worth of clothes all the washing and ironing (and looking after 2 year old and 2 month old). It was quite satisfying to get the last lot put away before the school run. I did all the ironing except shirts.

I didn't manage the sheets or towels in this time. Just clothes for 5.

Shall I dare to leave it all to Monday again......

Oh you're all lying very good.

We just have a laundry mountain ALL THE TIME.

We have made some progress with laundry baskets for each person (5 of us) which means less sorting.

I keep telling myself I must just bung another load on but mostly, it's DH's job...

SammyK · 22/01/2009 13:47

I am a WAHM me, dp and ds, and I usually put a load on daily to keep on top of things

anothermansmother · 22/01/2009 14:01

Cat64 i have to do 2 loads a day, bedding, towels, swimming kit gym kit, dance kits coats etc, Ds seems to ome home with mud on coat everyday, so it has to be washed, towels are only used once and beds changed twice a week, usually more if DS has an accident. i unfortunatley dont like the thought of wearing anything more than once ( with exception of coats) worn once, and washed. so maybe im just creating washing for myself...and perhaps this is why i always have ironing to do!!

anothermansmother · 22/01/2009 14:02

i have just read that and it seems a ridiculous amount for 2 of us!

ben5 · 22/01/2009 14:04

there are 4 of us. i normally put a load on every day. on tuesday i wash all bedding and towels, so end up doing 4 loads that day. i iron every other day.(i have 2 boys who seem to attract dirt!!)

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 22/01/2009 14:09

I do 2 loads a day.
I put the washer on when I go to bed so it is finished when I get up and then I re-load it and it is out drying mid morning.

If I only ever had to do our clothes I could get away with one wash most days but once we add bedding and towels and washing up from our messy play group it adds and extra load a day.

I try to do a load of ironing each day but it does mount up if I miss a day or two.

Alibear1 · 22/01/2009 15:14

anothermansmother - you only wear things or use a towel once? If I did that then I think I'd need to do about 3 loads a day every day! lol

I do a load a day and then an extra one or two somewhere in the week. If we are away at the weekend or have guests then it piles up a bit with the extra sheets and towels.

I second BonsoirAnna that having decent machines really helps - we bought new just before DS was born otherwise I think we would be living in a laundry mountain, they will both take a 9kg load.
I do one sheets, one towels, 3 nappies, 2 DS clothes/blankets/muslins etc, 1 undies, 1/2 clothes during a normal week. Blimey that's a lot of washing when you write it all down!!

FLUM you fucker - motherhood has got to you, WHY would you do all your washing on one day? what a dull day.

paranoidmother · 24/01/2009 14:09

I'd love to know how you manage to do all the washing in one day. I seem to manage to keep it down to 3-4 loads a day, 6 days a week sometimes more.

There is 5 of us and we re-wear clothes that aren't dirty, what does everyone else do?

I'm on the 4th load for today and hoping to fit another one in before the afternoon is out and it's only 2pm! (I do have a problem drying it all though and have airers throughout the house)

Clary · 24/01/2009 21:34

parannoidmother so you are doing 18-24 loads a week?

What on earth are you washing? Are you one of those MN-ers who washes the towels at every use?

If not, do you wash the kit for a footie team or something?

I once tallied my washes for a week and it was 9.

That includes bedlinen every week, towels every week and clothes for 5 messy people.

BTW to answer OP I do it on a daily basis - I find that otherwise someone needs sthg that is still in the "dirty" pile. Also I WOTH so yr plan not practical for me.

kickassangel · 24/01/2009 22:36

mondays & fridays - mondays are clothes days, they are dried by & ironed on weds eve - dd is running out of stuff by then. fri is sheets & towels.
i have space to hang 2 - 3 loads at a time, use tumble drier to part dry, as otherwise takes too long for things to dry, then leave them hanging to finish off (also decreases ironing) in summer will dry stuff outside
so about 5 loads a week (big top loader machine) try to tread the line between economical & ecological dirty tree huggers & fresh sparkling clean family.
dh still thinks about 1 - 2 loads a week does it!

wheesht · 24/01/2009 22:39

Goodnesss, if I did the washing once a week we would be drowning in dirty clothes! Do 2-3 loads every day and extra when doing bedding. Are six of us.

ohappydays · 25/01/2009 14:53

one tip that really works for me.
I allow my son to watch an extra tv programme in evening eg, Simpsons while he folds all the washing or puts on hangers. Hes happy and im happy. can easily do two loads during a programme - no ironing and i put it straight in the cupboards.

LuckySalem · 25/01/2009 14:54

I do mine in one day (normally 4 loads)

paranoidmother · 26/01/2009 08:11

CharlieandLola I'm glad we're not the only ones who spend £80 a week on elec! It's a nightmare

carrotsandpeasifyouplease · 26/01/2009 08:33

I too think about this, if I do it all on a friday (i have fridays off) then it all gets done and i just have one quick one on sunday night but am loath to do anything on a sunday night. If I do it on a wedndesday night it just drags it out until the weekend so i've decided to stick to the friday / sunday washes as at least then it is all done for most of the week.
And another thing, if I do it on a wednesday night I end up doing more washes in total for the week because they may not be as full loads for the individual types white, colours, pales etc. so I end up using more electricity when I stretch it out.
god I need to get out more.
