Tea stains on my mugs... help?

I cannot get the tea stains out of one of my mug sets. I can only assume it has something to do with the type of china - my mum bought them for us a few years ago and I think they're from the Royal Horticultural Society or something. The tea stains are driving me insane. I would resort to bleech, but DP would leave me! . any thoughts? Have tried lemon juice, boiling water, and bicarb in various combinations with no success. TIA

try steradent (denture tablets)
i use it in my teapot

AmIOdetteOrOdile · 19/01/2009 11:57

Salt?

Lauriefairycake · 19/01/2009 11:57

a very weak solution of bleach and don't tell dh

also hot water and vinegar maybe?

OhBling · 19/01/2009 11:58

Okay. sounds weird but I'll try anything right now - I keep giving people chipped mugs because the stained ones are too embarrassing (we are getting married in a month and have mugs on the gift list so don't want to buy any new ones until we've seen if anyone gives us the ones we've already picked out).
Can I buy them at the supermarket?

I use steradent too. Much better than bicarbonate of soda!

I also use out of date soluble paracetamol. clunk clunk fizz!

OhBling · 19/01/2009 11:59

Laurie - I seriously seriously considered it. I honestly don't think that with a good rinse it's a problem but he is completely paranoid and drives me crazy.

Vinegar is a good idea too - I'll give that a try.

I use sterilising solution....the type for sterilising baby bottles.

it is like bleach in one way as it does bleach mugs/china etc, but doesn;t have that smell or taste associated with bleach because obviously it can;t being used for baby stuff!

M&S do decent plain ones for £1. I buy them for clients as it doens't matter if they break, they all match and you can get nice colours.

OhBling · 19/01/2009 12:01

I was wondering whether baby sterilising bits would work. Certainly easy to buy as well.

Thank you everyone. I have a LOT of ideas here. I am mildly concerned by how much this has been obsessing me, but am letting it go!

yes Psycho has it- soak in milton for an hour!
I had to strilise some things after D&V bug, and this was a lovely side-effect
I find using a green scourer on mugs keeps the tea stains away in the first place.

OhBling · 19/01/2009 12:07

Agree on the green scourer - normally. My other mugs are all lovely and white on the inside. It's just this one set which obviously are more likely to stain! Sigh.

Milton or similar is brilliant, also good if you fill up a stainless steel sink with a solution too.

sazzerbear · 19/01/2009 14:48

Definitely steradent, works a treat!

jazzandh · 19/01/2009 15:46

Biological washing powder. Amazing.

notamumyetbutoneday · 20/01/2009 09:09

I use a very weak solution of bleach now as it was costing me a fortune in boots for steradent. i can confirm we are all still alive and well chez notamumyet!
