how do you judge how many potatoes you need?

for roast, i peel, then count in twos generally, then cut into appropriate size til there are about 20 pots.
for mash i generally peel and cut until there are 15.
dh reckons we shoudl get right amount and weigh them - thereby for future reference, that is how much we will need

come solve this dilemma - tell me your secret

I'll be watching this too. I seem to swing wildly between practically 1 potato each or a mashed potato mountain!

For mash I allow 2 potatoes per person plus 1 over
For roasties it's 2 per person
for new potatoes I allow 4-5 per person depending on the size
chips/ wedges I allow 1 fairly large per person.

differentID · 11/01/2009 16:38

these are all adults in my measurements btw.

depends on so many things - if they are bakers I allow one per person - no matter what I am doing with them if they are littlies I allow 2-3 per person.

Waste food? Now there's a thing I never have! Cold extra roast potatoes seem to evaporate in the fridge between dinner time and tea time! That's what my family tell me anyway! Extra mash also goes in the fridge for either a shepards pie or bubble and squeak.

2 per person for roaties?

we must be a greedy bunch then

depending on the size of the spud- thats up to 4 roasties per spud!

FAQtothefuture · 11/01/2009 16:48

yeah tiddly little ones unless it's a HUGE one.

If I do roasties in this house I will usually have 5 or 6, DS1 and 2 eat about 4/5 each and DS3 now managed to (sort of) plough through 2

lol. I've had to really look at my portion sizes recently- I need to lose weight to get pregnant. I found a book second hand which was a guide to catering students about what constituted a portion. Although out of date, it's been good. Can I find it now? Can I hell!

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 11/01/2009 17:04

One good size spud per person in this house for mash.

More for roasties. You can never have too many roasties. Mmmmm......

differentID · 11/01/2009 17:08

I sort out my spuds in size order for various purposes
Big ones for bakers, next size down for roasties/wedges and smaller ones for mash. If they're really small I'll still use the same number but make colcannon instead of plain mash.
