DP insists all veggies should go in a cupboard (dark, but not very cool unfortunately) whereas I do all most of the cooking and know for a fact that veggies last longer in the fridge.

He'll concede to salad-y items in the fridge but we have potatoes, carrots, parsnips, onions etc in the cupboard. and they go off quickly

Which is the right way? can't really impose my 'rules' as he built kitchen so can't impose my wrath

My fridge is dodgy and freezes stuff in some sections. They all go in the utility room. Cucumber/tomatoes in fruit bowl.
I keep a lot of stuff in the fridge that doesn't really need to be there - jams etc. When I get round to a new one think it'll be smaller.

emkana · 09/01/2009 20:38

I'm with your dp, sorry.

i think if veg is fresh then it can be stored in cupboards.
potatoes should def not need to go in the fridge.
my mum has always stored her potatoes and onions in sacks in the larder.

mine mostly does go in the fridge but that's because we have no room to keep it anywhere else lol

Root veg last longer in the fridge as they think it is winter and stop growing / sprouting

beaniebaby25 · 09/01/2009 20:44

do potatoes count as root veg?

the thing is we have underfloor heating which extends to under the kitchen cabinets, so the drawer that they're kept in warms up and turns things to mush really quickly.

yes - I keep my potatoes in the fridge and they never sprout.

beaniebaby25 · 09/01/2009 21:03

pots in a potato bag in the cupboard with onions ( not otuchhing)
other veg in the fridge

NumptyMum · 09/01/2009 21:11

I think people keep potatoes in the dark to stop them going green, which is poisonous (at least my Mum always gave dasterdly warnings about green potatoes). So perhaps your DP is concerned about them being in the fridge because when it's open there's a light on, but of course it's dark in there most of the time... you could always put them in a potato bag in the fridge. We keep all our veg in the fridge because our flat is warm and we've no space elsewhere, never been a problem for us.

dylsmum1998 · 09/01/2009 21:51

in the fridge for all veg. as flat is very warm and no space any where else.
potatoes any dark hole i can find in th ecupboards as the fridge is usually too full for the potatoes as well

beaniebaby25 · 09/01/2009 21:53

..um...what's a potato sack? Is it like a hessian bag? or that heavy duty card/paper type stuff?

My potatoes are in an old ammunition box in the garage. Veg in boxes on shelves in the garage. Fruit in bowl in dining room (similar temperture to garage!). Salad in fridge.

CharleeinChains · 10/01/2009 08:49

Veg and Fruit in the fridge (we have our flat really warm) potatos and onions in a basket on a cabnet in the chilly kitchen.

mymama · 10/01/2009 09:16

potatoes and onions in cupboard. All other veg in fridge.

apples and bananas in bowl on worktop and all other fruit in fridge.

I am in Australia and temp inside my house is around 25 degrees. Not sure if that makes a difference.

Lazycow · 10/01/2009 09:33

Most veg (except salad veg) should go in a cool dark place. The problem is that my flat doesn't have a cool dark place and in fact a lot of moder houses don't have this either so the next best place is a fridge (that doesn't freeze)

If I store root vegetables outside the fridge in our flat (which i do if there is no room in the fridge) they sprout very quickly.
