Central heating - are we odd then?

I need to ask after things people said on a couple of threads (about vests and gas bills).

We have our heating on in the am (from say 6.30 to 8 ish) and again in the pm (from say 4pm to 9pm tho sometimes I override it for an hour at 9.30/put the gas fire on).

That's it. And yet some people clearly have the heating on all night. I would never consider this (tbh I reckon it would give me a headache and DH would hate it as he is very warm).

Am I being unneccasrily mean? What's the MN split on this?

i am the same as you OP.
ours is on from 6.30-9am and then again from 3.30-9 in the evening.

we've never ever had it on at night

Oh I do hope so FAQ. Just one teensy little word of warning though. When we moved into this place we thought it was warmer than the ridiculously cold rented place we used to live in. Now we're not so sure... But it does sound like you'll have more control which has got to be good.

We're pinning our hopes on the new large storage heater we've got coming next week for the sitting room. We're banking on it transforming our lives (yeah right, and pigs might fly). At least it might work properly though which is a start, until we can afford to insulate the stone walls (some time this century if we're lucky).

I think it will be better, it's much more modern house, and if I'd walked into this house when it had been empty and not had heating on for a few weeks I'd have frozen for sure .

It has cavity wals, newer central heating system, and there wasn't a single noticeable draft as I walked round - unlike here LOL.

RipVanTwinkle · 08/01/2009 22:56

Oh yes that does sound better. Good luck. (I used to hate the idea of a modern house - now I positively drool at the thought. )

FAQtothefuture · 08/01/2009 22:59

oh I still hope that one day when I've met a nice rich man I'm working again I'll be able to buy my own "period" house, I know they can be warm, and not so horrendously expensive/hard to heat as this one. My friend down the road has a nice warm house (with no noticeable drafts hehe) and doesn't have to have her heating on 1/2 as much as I do.

We've had our on constantly over the last few weeks because I can't stand being cold and we've all been ill. I do turn the thermostat down to 18 at night though.
I did turn it off one night last week and DS1 told me the next morning he'd ben shivering in his bed

Starbear · 08/01/2009 23:40

We normally have the heating off at night. At the moment we can't get it right for our Ds, we turn it on 17 he's too hot and comes into our bed. Turn it off too cold comes into our bed. Heater off double up quilt too hot?cold haven't got a clue. He's in our bed. past three days! I think tonight heating off (getting warmer anyway) bottom half of bed extra quilt, top normal going to bed now and crossing fingers he doesn't push one of us out of our bedP.S I hate it on.

thumbwitch · 08/01/2009 23:42

I have it on at night because I have to get up in the middle of the night if DS wakes up.
And because it is farking FREEZING in my house at the mo.
And because it isn't really working properly either, thanks to a new boiler, a new radiator and the whole system being full of crud and not having recovered from being interfered with.

mysterymoniker · 08/01/2009 23:44

no timer so it's on alllll night unless rare occasion of not having to get up early

find it v difficult to get up in the dark AND cold

expatinscotland · 08/01/2009 23:45

we have LPG.

we have it on a timer.

it's off in the night. it goes off at 12.30. comes on again from 7.30-10.

we keep a halogen heater on all night in our bedroom, however, because 9-week-old DS sleeps in his cot in there with us

ramonaquimby · 08/01/2009 23:45

we do same, I think most people do? those that we know. On the few occasions when we've mistakenly left the heating on all night I've woken up really hot , and then scurried downstairs to turn it back to 'timer' again!

am loving my wheat bags at the moment.....

mysterymoniker · 08/01/2009 23:47

when I grow up I'm getting a proper boiler, a timer AND a thermostat

my boiler was installed before man landed on the moon

skramblenotdieting · 08/01/2009 23:49

I would normally have it on half an hour before we get up and then off during the day if out, if at home I would normally put it on again in the afternoon. On again in the evening until I go to bed, not on at night.

Not on at all just now, broke.

thumbwitch · 08/01/2009 23:50

so was mine, and then it blew a gasket before Crimbo, so now we have a black-box version that doesn't pay any attention to the thermostat downstairs.

GivePeasAChance · 08/01/2009 23:51

My heating went off hours ago (was on from 5 til about 8pm). Sitting here with my (3rd) hotwater bottle and big jumper. Does the job ! I hate the heating and would never have it on if I had my way.......makes me feel claustrophibic and ill ..........but people complain that our house is always cold so have to relent cos that is WRONG !
