I thought that it would be the end of my problems when I descovered Vanish Cristal White. But... I have a big problem with muddy clothes, white school poloshirts/shirts especially. I was told to let the mud dry and then brush it off and then wash it. It work when there isn't too much mud but my DSs always come back plastered with mud from school. I am now facing this : getting them a brand new set of tops every week or send them to school with clean but still stained tops. Please tell me you have got a magic tip that works on really heavy mud staines.

Most of my boys stuff is stained. Its all part of being a mucky school boy.

The only thing that really gets the stains out IMO is pegging out in the sun, and as I have mentioned on the Fountain Pen on the White shirt thread, fat chance of that at the moment.

Gorionine · 08/01/2009 17:19

What does it do to leave clothes in the sun? does it really take the stains off?

I remember in school economics (a long long time ago) being told that to wash a carpet you should put it nice side down on snow and it is supposed to do miracles, I will try that with the school shirts, never know, it might work on them as well.

The sun fades the stain. It really works.

Gorionine · 08/01/2009 17:26

My poor Dss might have to wait until the next summer holiday to wear clean school shirts then!

Sorry forgot something, are soda cristals like Biotex? because it does not work on our school's mud.

If the clothes are white put to soak for 1-2hrs in a weak bleach solution,( it tells you on the bottle what the ratio is)I have found this works on most stains enen red wine. although thats a whole other story .
HTH

flossie64 · 08/01/2009 18:36

EVEN not enen

Gorionine · 08/01/2009 18:53

I have tried the bleach, but somes tops(cotton ones I think )become a bit yellowish with it. Does soda cristal do that as well?(get white cotton a bit yellow)
Flossie64, I am useless with accronymes, What does HTH stand for?

At the moment, it looks like I will try soda cristals, it is starting to sound quite familiar actually, can you use it to unblock sinks? if so I think DH has got some in the garage.I'll go and have a look later.

Hope That Helps
Maybe the bleach was a bit strong or left too long?!
You must wash out as soon as you take them out of the soaking liquid, sorry if I sound as though I am lecturing you.

Gorionine · 08/01/2009 19:01

Thanks Flossie, it does (help, not sound like a lecture!). I will try it again, even yellow school shirts would look better than what they are wearing lately!

Herbietea, are you here? is caustic soda the same as soda cristal (it is what I found in the garage and there is no mention on it that you can soak clothes in it.)

Yes I have tried soaking in vanish it really does miracles for all sort of staines but not mud somehow. Anyway, I brushed the mud this morning and I just added Soda Cristals to tomorrow's shopping list. Thank you herbietea.

Look on the bright side if you were to use caustic soda ,there wouldn't be any shirts left to wash Problem solved ,although your children may be a bit cold.

Gorionine · 09/01/2009 14:20

LOL at that!
