New Year, New House (sort of) and New Determination to Keep It Clean

I don't do New Year Resolutions as such, but this year is special. We are half way through a big conversion/extension project on our house and I have reached the point in my life when I am totally sick of living in a house I feel ashamed to have people visit.

I am thinking that once the builders have gone, I am going to really make a difference to the cleanliness of the house I live in. I was reading today that a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom house should take 4 hours a week to clean. My house, when finished, will be double that size, but I can't see myself being able to clean it in 8 hours. I have always been overwhelmed by the mess in my house.

What I want is your tips for getting on top of cleaning a house. Don't mention flylady to me though! I am not that obsessive!

you still have teh googles? and are worried about clutter? that calls for only one emotovon, but we dont ahve it on mn, only on msn

DumbledoresGirl · 04/01/2009 22:24

Aww no, dont be like that! They are in a pocket in the back of a booklet we bought at the time about the eclipse. So basically what I am saying is they are part of a book, on a bookshelf. You know we have 1000s of books - they dont count as clutter do they?

I feel the eclipse is a really important event in my life and the life of my boys. We were talking about it only the other day and lamenting that my younger children had not lived to see it and may not live to see another one. Unless they become globetrotters like Moondog.

Hmm, funnily enough on my to do list is buying eclipse glasses.

Oly trouble with travelling in Bangladesh is that you eat the smae bloody meal every day, three times a day. It would be a marvellous place to lose weight. After the 20th meal of rice, lentils and scrawny chicken, you just push it away.

naswm · 04/01/2009 22:27

paret of a boook is fine! you didnt say that orihginally

i was working when it was teh explise, so it wasnt such an event for me, but i still remember it it all well

DumbledoresGirl - you didn't miss much - we took DD1 to Padstow, we were so excited - weather was cloudy so although the sky went dark you didn't actually see anything of the sun through the special goggles - even worse, got home and everyone was telling us the good view of the partial eclipse they saw in Berkshire (apparently a welder's mask on Slough Trading Estate gave one friend a good view). It was the biggest anti-climax of my life. So eclipse-viewing is definitely on my "bucket list"

Hi Lucky - fancy meeting you here! We did a huge clean-up for Xmas so am intending to stay on top,. Like everyone else here, though, it's the clutter not the dirt that's the problem.

DumbledoresGirl · 05/01/2009 11:36

Oh yes housemum, you have reminded me. Both my father and brother went to the effort of driving to Cornwall and back for the day and both said much the same as you re clouds and not seeing the eclipse. But still, you had total darkness which was denied those of us further east. I remember we had clear skies and could view the eclipse easily, but it is amazing how light it is even with 98% of the sun missing - just like the beginning of twilight on a summer's day really.
