Stained toilet

leoleosuperstar · 03/01/2009 16:54

Constantly getting stained. Bleaching works but it reappears so quickly that I think it isn't actually cleaning it just removing the colour.
I think I have tried most things on the market.
Any ideas, special tips..
Thank you.

What sort of stains are you talking about ???

ChasingSquirrels · 03/01/2009 17:09

limescale presumably, we have this - the build-up is there, bleach just, well, bleaches it, and it soon gets stained again.
You need some elbow grease, try and remove as much water as possible, either scoop some out or plunge down the loo with the toilet brush which will push some up and over the s-bend.
Then use a limescale remover, leave for a bit and scrub - I have been known to do it with a scourer to try and get rid of really stuborn stuff.

If anyone knows a limescale remover that will just disolve it in the water please please post!

ahundredtimes · 03/01/2009 17:09

Is it built up limescale - a sort of browny colour?

You can get some acid for it, can't remember what it's called. Perhaps someone else will.

Not environmentally friendly, but effective.

IllegallyBrunette · 03/01/2009 17:10

Pouring a can of coke down it is supposed to help i think.

ChasingSquirrels · 03/01/2009 17:11

viakal (sp?) is a good limescale remover, but I have found you do have to apply it neat, which means getting rid of the water first.

ahundredtimes · 03/01/2009 17:13

A can of coke? Really?

I might go and try

DisastrousNuclearAccident · 03/01/2009 17:14

Please don't scrub with anything abrasive like a scouring pad. I made the mistake of doing this and then the stains built up even more quickly as the deposits got into teh scratches the scourer had made.

Personally i finf the best remedy is to get into teh habit of swishing the toilet brush around on a daily basis...even if there is nothing to see.

I also find the limescale tablets you can get pretty effective at removig the initial build-up.

Spirits of Salts. You can get it from a hardware shop or plumbers merchant, it comes in a red bottle. It's the common name for hydrochloric acid, so treat with caution. This is what plumbers use for really, really vile loos that look to be beyond redemption, and my god it works.

If doing a really bad loo (think repossessed semi-derelict house like our old one) remove the water from the loo (rubber gloves and a large sponge). If it's not that bad you can leave the water in.

Then open the bathroom window and pour down the spirits of salts. The stuff will smoke, be warned. Close the loo lid, leave for a while. Don't let anybody near the place. When it's settled down, use an old loo brush to scrub a bit, then leave again.

Flush the loo (with the lid still closed, you don't want the stuff splashing around). Flush a few more times to be on the safe side.

Bingo, sparkly clean loo!

ahundredtimes · 03/01/2009 17:16

There's a big powerful bubbling acid you can put down, sodium something?

ahundredtimes · 03/01/2009 17:16

HYDROCHOLIC ACID.

Frogs has it.

Give her a clean toilet sticker somebody.

ChasingSquirrels · 03/01/2009 17:16

def not scratchy scouring pad, I meant the foamy washing up type.
Tablet thing sounds v good idea - like for kettles etc? Might have a look for something.

Daily cleaning would probably be best option

ChasingSquirrels · 03/01/2009 17:17

right, forget the tablets and go straight for the hard stuff then!

leoleosuperstar · 03/01/2009 17:45

You are wonderful ladies you really are.
Thank you. I have tried doing a clean every day but then seem to miss a day or so and bam! Maybe not just a day but you know what I mean.
Think I'll get dp in there with the acid.

these are the tablets. There are also other brands. You can find them on the supermarket shelves with the rim blocks; toilet cleaners etc. They really do work wonders and much much safer than hydrochloric acid (although you should still be careful as with any household chemical). The other great thing about it is that they stain the limescale blue...which might sound worse than brown - but what it actually means is that when you stick the toilet brush down to brush away the stuff that it has dissolved you can see the bits that you have missed (kind of like dental disclosing tablets).

Trust me after dealing with the loo from hell after a relative died...2 of these tablets overnight did the business - and I know for a fact that your loo won't be anywhere near the same state as the one I cleaned.

anothermansmother · 03/01/2009 21:22

steredent tablets...or other brand of denture cleaning tablets. saves a fortune works better than any other cleaner i have ever used...my loo was a funny colour when i moved in...dirty workmen! [vomiting emotion]

MrsDoylesMole · 03/01/2009 21:24

pumice stone will get it off

glitterkitty · 03/01/2009 21:55

Cilit Bang!

Tis brilliant stuff, remove as much water as you can , spray, wait a couple minutes and wipe round.

Harpic limescale remover toilet stuff works best on long term basis, I find.

The acid sounds scary!

heather1980 · 04/01/2009 17:33

white vinegar will clean limescale. get as much water out first, pour in the vinegar and leave overnight, swish round with the brush and flush.
