Can anyone tell me about carpet cleaning?

I want to get the carpets cleaned.

I think I want a deep clean - they're pretty filthy and need a really good do. We've got 2 young children and a dog so lots of dubious stains and grub.

Am looking in Yellow Pages and everyone offers different things and I don't know what's good and what to avoid. Dry cleaning? Chemical cleaning? Eco cleaning? Truck mounted cleaning?!

Can you recommend anything or tell me what to avoid?

moved house recently and had our rotten cream carpets cleaned by someone with a truck mounted machine, it was brilliant, carpets looked like new and dried really quickly.

Thanks Nancy. Have spoken to a few people. Fingers crossed for my scabby old carpets!

Hire the Rug Doctor, Homebase hire it out. I used it about a month ago on my sister in laws recommendation and it's really good.

Quite hard work but it works.

It cost about £35.00 to hire it for 24 hours, £15.00 for the hire of the machine and £20.00 for the cleaning solution of which I have still got 2/3 left for future use.

Normally I would have got a professional carpet cleaning service to come and do it for me but moneys tight so went for this option, I'll definately use this again instead of the professionals, it works.

My carpets were filthy, I didn't realise how bad they were until I'd finished, they look virtually new again.

Oliviasmama- i am looking into hiring the rug doctor this weekend to give the carpets a clean before Christmas. Im looking at hiring it on sunday which means Ill only have between 10.30-4pm cos of the opening hours. Do you think this is long enough to do two double bedrooms?

also, i know it can be used to clean upholstery eg sofas- did you try this?

Thanks

Plenty of time NAMYBOD - It'll probably take you a couple of hours if that.

I didn't do my sofas but my sister in law did hers, gosh what a difference. I'm doing mine before christmas too along with a very stained cream (never again!) rug.....DD1 !?!

I saw the Rug Doctor thing the other day and was tempted but think i would rather get someone else to do it while we are all out!

My questions are:

  • do they move the furniture out of the way?
  • are the carpets soaking wet afterwards?
  • can you put furniture on wet carpets?

Ours are really filthy
