Dumb question about painting over plaster

Have just had bedroom plastered,

what do i need to do now?

Can I whack the emulsion straight on or is there an in-between step?

My head is about to explode with the strain of
DIY

This is NOT MY DEPARTMENT usually- can you tell?

if i remember right:
let it dry out properly
either seal it with diluted PVA or apply a diluted 'mist coat' of paint
then paint

why am i responding to this we have a bedroom that has now been unpainted for TWO YEARS, I should be painting not messing about online...

You should use a watered down emulsion first and then paint as usual.

(that will be my job in a couple of weeks time!)

TurkeyLurkey · 02/12/2008 21:32

Put a few good coats of cheapo magnolia on it first as the first couple of coats of paint will soak straight into the plaster.

When that is dry stick your proper paint colour over it.

Hope that helps.

Water down the first coat of emulsion, you don't need to use any sort of sealant.

As littlefrog says.

diluted pva sounds spooky

thank you- will go for the watered down emulsion I think

We built our own house and had to paint from scratch every single room after plastering.

Rooms were all fine to paint on after a couple of coats of Wilkos Magnoia emulsion. Provides a good base for the proper colour to go on. Didn't bother sealing.
