Silly question - what's the difference between a large rug and a small carpet?

We've got a tiled floor in the conservatory and I'd like to get a large rug to make it more cosy. But it seems that large rugs are more expensive that small pieces of carpet! Is there any practical reason why I can't put a piece of carpet over the tiles instead of a rug?

Thanks

Would the edges fray?

Edges of rugs would be finished and neat whereas carpet would just look like it had been cut. Might fray.

I just bought a big offcut of plain oaty coloured carpet this week to use as a rug for the DDs room. The original piece measured 4 metres by 1.65 but I got them to cut it in half to make a piece 2 m by 1.65. i didnt have to take the whole piece. They hemmed it by machine with a sort of over-stitch. It looks fine and cost much less for the quality as it was an offcut.

Yeah, I suppose, I'd not thought about fraying. I'd have to see if I could get it bound. Shitemum, did the carpet shop do that for you or did you hae to take it elsewhere?

The carpet shop did it, but I live in Spain where they still do this sort of thing...you can get your shoes properly repaired by an old boy whose been doing it since he was a lad and buy nails by weight too
