Anyone got a Vax carpet washer? Is it worth the money?

I can buy a Vax carpet cleaner for about as much as it would cost to get someone in to clean all our carpets for us once... but are they good, are they worth it, or not as great as rug doctors or the professionals?

I bought a Vax carpet washer about a month ago reduced from £169 (I think) to £100 from Amazon. Absolutely love it. I've had vax dual hoover and carpet cleaner for years and it's been fantastic. The new one just washes carpets and is fantastic. It's upright but it has a long tube for stairs and upholstery. The best thing is that just being a washer means no converting from a hoover. I have two grotty teenage boys, two grotty dogs and a husband who walked tar up the brand new stair carpet a week after it was laid. And it's cream. Because I like to disinfect floors we have laminate in every room except the stairs and landing. When I washed them the dirt that came out was disgusting. We live near a beach so it also picks up a lot of sand. Very easy to use and empty and very satisfying.

I want to reanimate this thread because I feel like I have a bit of value to add to it especially for others passing by since this has popped up quite a lot in Google when researching for carpet cleaners. Carpet cleaners have also changed a bit since it was started.

Vax make great carpet washers and their top models come with 6 year guarantees which is enormous. However you need to spend upwards of £200 for a brand new model or around £140 for a really really good few year old model which is well worth the money in my opinion. Although it looks expensive you will more than make up for it in savings from not hiring. If you don't buy a good model you will be really disappointed and the carpet may end up looking worse than it was before.

Bissell also make great carpet washers and are the number one selling brand. I find they feel slightly sturdier and more robust than Vaxs but it is negligible. Vax have a greater better range in my opinion though and are typically less expensive. I have a tonne of recommendations and info for carpet cleaners in all price ranges Here

I've got a vax rapide and I do think it's worth the money (I paid around £100).
I'm inclined to say it's not as good as the rug doctor but I used them both on different carpets in different houses so I'm not sure it's a fair comparison.

I bought an upright vax a good 6 years ago. it cost me about £80, probably on special offer. ive used it more times than I remember. It probably isn't anywhere near as good as a professional clean but it does the job. no matter how many times I clean my carpet, the water comes out dirty, which to me, shows its working and worth doing. we don't wear shoes inside or have pets. but we do have 4 kids! My vax broke. Last time I used it the carpets ended up soaked. It left them full of water.

Prior to that, it was very good, though. It suddenly packing up like that didn't do my living room carpet any good at all..it ended up baggy.

Replacing carpets now and no doubt need a new carpet washer, am looking at steam cleaners at the moment.
