aah it wasn't a few years ago when I got my NG one . Thought it seemed like a good 'green' idea and I assume it saves money but does your aga get cold at night? If so how would I:

cook my oats
bake my christmas cake- pause while i take a deep sniff
iron the kids PE gear
dry the towels
desquelch DS soggy trainers
not get hypothermia in the mornings

I tried the porridge thing with my lower oven (Rayburn) the porridge tasted metallic...do you know where I might be going wrong

oh dear i'm no expert I jsut bung the oats and water in the oven , take it out in the morning and whisk it up with some milk. ( whisking very important imo for creamy porridge). I would try using a pyrex dish to see if it makes a difference. The only time my stirabout tastes unpleasant is when i've use too much water. HTH

I put oats and milk in just before I go to bed and in the morning there is lovely porridge ready.

Another nice thing to do in the oven is a baked breakfast - first thing in the morning pop in sausages/black pudding add bacon rashers, mushrooms and tomatoes after 20 mins, bake for 20 minutes. Delicious.

I have a Rayburn which does all the cooking, hot water and radiators. It's fired by wood collected and chopped by my handsome husband. We've only had it for a few weeks and it's making such a difference to the house. So homely.

I keep baking bread and biscuits. As the oven's on anyway, I feel I might as well chuck something in it. I've also been doing granola in there.

I am ridiculously excited. It's so try what they say about these things being more a way of life than just a cooker. I don't care how pretentious it sounds.

Welllllll ..... my home smells warm and woody, I have a massive kettle which is always just off the boil, the oven is always warm and ready to receive, the water piping hot and the radiators warm. And all this on free, sustainable, renewable wood dragged from fallen bits and pieces in the woods and joists in skips.

I have to admit there's a fair bit of collection and chooing involved but it's all good, clean and out-doorsy. Now all I need is a dog to accompany us on our wood collecting trips and to curl up on the hearth rug next to the Rayburn.

Incidentally, we've kept our gas cooker for the time being at least as the Rayburn will probably not be used so much in the summer months.
