Cleaning bath toys

DD has a lovely Finding Nemo bathset, which we bought her from the Disney Shop. After ever usewe make sure that they are emptied of water but still seem to be growing the horrible black mould inside.

Is there anyway to get them clean inside?

I don't want to lob them as she loves them (and they weren't cheap).

TIA.

Milton fluid, but we gave in and binned our nemo one in the end - too much black crap

LilRedWG · 24/11/2008 18:23

Thanks - I'll buy some this week and give it a go. It is the Nemo one that's most obvious as you can see it from outside - yuck.

Why do they make bath toys with holes in. Surely it would be much better if the water couldn't get in.

I don't know what your bathset is made of, but I lob a lot of the bath toys in the dishwasher to get them clean.

SlartyBartFast · 24/11/2008 18:33

some people shove em all in the dishwasher. have you tried that?

LilRedWG · 24/11/2008 18:49

I'm willing to give it a try. Does it really get them clean inside though?

ime, and my dd's bath toys were covered in oilatum (bath oil) - it got that off.

LilRedWG · 24/11/2008 18:52

Right - tomorrow they're in the dishwasher (or at least a sacrifical one as a test). Nemo is going to have a big swim!

It's these feckers.

My ds's toys are the same. We don't have a dishwasher but will try the milton liquid. I want to just throw them away but dp tells me I'm being stupid

LilRedWG · 26/11/2008 09:46

Nemo's dad is having a ride in the dishwasher as we speak. Will report back.

So?? Did he drown?

Poledra · 29/11/2008 15:42

Or lightly poach?

fishnet · 29/11/2008 16:15

This is drastic but wiht our Disney cars set (also too good to through away) we are resorting to drilling a large hole in the bottom with one of those circular drill bitsand the cleaning out with vinegar and a cotton bud.

fishnet · 29/11/2008 16:15

"throw" away

stickybeaker · 29/11/2008 16:37

GLad someone else posted this - I have the same problem. Was just going to bin them though (we don't have a dishwasher)

LilRedWG · 29/11/2008 18:24

Two cycles through the dishwasher have had little discernable effect.

Not sure where we go from here. Will try the Milton and may even mix with a little bleach - again, I'll use Nemo's Dad as a trial run.

We have a slightly different Nemo set and it has yet to go black. My secret? Letting DD play with it during the day and not just in the bath. Ok, so 1st thing in the morning we end up with a little dribble somewhere from where they haven't drained completly, but playing with them normally seems to help

wrinklytum · 29/11/2008 21:49

Nothing has worked for mine, sadly.I have binned bath toys with holes in.Currently we have several empty different sized Vanish tubs plus scoops that the dcs enjoy playing with in the bath (Poor deprived children emoticon!)
