Help - I think my Freezer is broken but I can't actually tell - how do you know?

It's a Hotpoint Fridge Freezer. Put LOADS in it yesterday as got a lot of guests the next two weekends (oh please don't be broken and waste all that food!) but this morning when I came down from the front corner was some clear orange liquid, smells sweet. First thought, orange juice - but there is no evidence of leaking inside the freezer. Cleared it up and a very slow drip from under the machine it keeps reappearing. Everything that went in yesterday is frozen but it doesn't feel as cold as it should (when you open it now there isn't that instant condensation you normally get on the drawers). I can't hear it working but then it doesn't make a sound constantly. Have been to the Hotpoint website and it's useless. How do I know if it's working. Meant to be making an ice cream bombe today but won't be doing that until I'm sure I'm not going to be wasting more ingredients. But how do I know if it's actually broken? and if it is anyone any ideas what's wrong?

I don't know how you can be sure if it has broken or not, but a freezer thermometer would tell you for certain if the food is being kept at a safe temperature. A full freezer will not defrost very quickly as long as you keep the door shut.

I think ours is broken - all the stuff like chips and bread, which should be rock-hard, is soft to the touch, and the ice-cream is molten. Pretty sure sign, eh? How soft is your stuff?

Weegle · 21/11/2008 12:50

the stuffs not soft at all. I think it might be ok as there is a red light which the manual says should come on if the temp is dropping too low (it sometimes comes on if you have the door open a while) and that's not on. Hmmm, and it's stopped generating this orange fluid. Very weird. I so hope it's not broken.

Fauve - could yours just be a fuse? I know ours isn't as the fridge is definitely working.

I don't know. the food's all written off though. It's an old freezer which we keep in the garage, and if there's a power cut, the freezer doesn't come on again - something about safety regs.

Good luck with yours - maybe your guests could advise??
