are washer/driers any good or should we just stick to a plain washing machine

We've moved house and the current washing machine needs replacing. we don't have room for both a washer and a drier, so are thinking about a washer/drier. We wouldn't use the drier often, but I've heard that the drying on combined machines is a bit rubbish. Does anyone have one and is it good or bad? And does it affect how well clothes are washed? Thanks!

Ours was absolutely awful, MamaChris and I seem to recall they have a generally v bad reputation. I can't remember what brand it was- maybe zanussi?- but the dryer part broke within months and after the warranty ran out we stopped getting it repaired and just used it as a straight washing machine. Even when working they aren't the answer to your drying problems, tbh, as you have to dry in half loads, unless they've invented new ones that are better?

Ours is great but we rarely tumble - only towels or pants and vests if weather really bad.

Washes just fine too.

i had one once it was a hotpoint and dreadful. If you dont have the room for both, they are better than nothing but im with scummy on this, that you have to take half the load out and dry in 2 lots

Love ours, use it for undies/towels etc esp in this hideous weather. Would get one every time. Apparently under 10p an hour to run so its fine by me!

only pressed once honest!

I have one, it's a Zanussi.
Admittedly I don't dry in it unless a dire emergency but it is still going strong after 7 years.
Although I don't use the funtion I could put clothes in to wash and dry overnight as it has a delay switch on it too.

I have heard and read that seperates are better but I think that's if you use both far more often than I do or need both to run at the same time.

I'm a single Mum of one and I wash 4 times a week max and dry, maybe 4 times a year, so probably not the best person to advise!

I'd buy another should this one break though.

hmm... thanks for quick replies. it would be really good to able to run a drier in this weather, and didn't realise it was only 10p an hour. But I know it won't dry as well as a dedicated drier. For those who love their washer/drier, how long does it take to dry, say, 2 pairs of jeans?

We have a washer/drier, think its a hotpoint not quite sure. It is utterly crap at drying,it has a 6kg load for washing and thats fine but the drying is abysmal.

I can put in a half load for drying for 2 hours on high heat and it's still damp when it comes out. I'm still drying on the line when weather allows and take to the laundrette when raining. 20 mins to dry a load and a half and costs a quid, marvellous.

cilitbang · 18/11/2008 20:59

I had one up to two days ago....then it broke and I decided to upgrade to a 8kg load Bosch which I adore and bought one of these which is fab and doesn't take up too much room and holds up to 4 wash loads! the new washing machine spins at 1600 and so clothes are nearly dry and so don't take too long to dry. I hated the way the dryer got things all crumpled, and never smelt as fresh as they should of done and it took ages. With a washer dryer its so easy to just switch on the tumble and turn a blind eye to the bills/energy saving but you'll be ironing forever to get those creases out.
