Small holes in clothes after washing, how/why?

Very bizzare, several holes have appeared in clothes (all belonging to me) after being washed in the machine.

Am bit pissed off as about five of my favourite tops now have obvious holes in the front (and weirdly mainly in the same place).

Any ideas what is causing this? Do I have a washing mahcine poltergeist?

It's reassuring to see that I'm not the only one it's happening to, while at the same time being sorry for all of you that have ruined clothes. All my nice Uniqlo wool jumpers now have holes at navel level. The last one was a couple of weeks ago; I went out with a whole jumper and came back with a holey one. I'd thought it was the zip on my coat combined with the seatbelt causing it, but attempts to recreate that scenario didn't work. However, it doesn't seem to happen when I'm not wearing that coat, which is new this year, and I don't recall this happening in the past.

Lots of small holes have been appearing in my cotton and linen tops intermittently for a couple of years. I thought they may caused by moths however this week a new Mint Velvet top (which had never been in the wardrobe) was washed and holes appeared immediately. Having researched a little and given the location of the holes I think it may be due to ( invisible) splashes of dettol spray cleaner (use it all the time, it is great!) then a chemical reaction creates holes when they are washed. Such a pain I've lost too many of my favourite tops! Anyone else had a similar experience?

This happens on mine thanks to jeans. Rubs on the seam above the button (pointy bit!) so frustrating as so many tops ruined

This usually happens if you're not using the appropriate cycle on the washing machine - too faster spin or too vigarous wash action. If you're using cottons or (worse) quick wash, they tend to be very rough on clothes. Keep more delicate items to one side & use a synthetics or delicates cycle with a lower spin speed

All my good tops have holes in the front, same area. At first I thought it was the washing machine, had the service engineer out. No bra wires. Bought a new washer. Stopped wearing my belts. Is it the car seatbelt? Bought a soft cover for it but it doesn't happen across the body only around the tummy area so I have no idea but just counted up albeit twelve tops all fairly new and having to be replaced. Fine cotton tshirts. Then an actual cotton shirt shredded at the front. Very very distressed. Can't keep buying new tops.

Miele machine here. Fairly new..
No belts.
Only my tops. At waist level.
Nearly always use 20 min quick wash.
Always use Fairy liquid washing detergent.

Thinking cleaning spray or seat belt.

This happens to me too, belly button area. I made an effort to only wash my tops separately on a delicate cycle and it still happened so am convinced it's then rubbing on my jeans/trousers! Very annoying!!

The reason your machine is making holes in the clothes is they are sucked through the holes in the drum and the edges inside those hole are rough and sharp , if you put a wooden cocktail stick inside those holes and scrape the edges of the holes by moving the stick in and out it will take some of the wood off the stick and thats whats making the holes. My Bosch machine is doing it to my clothes.
