Light for utility room

Our utility room light , which was a square fitted affair with starter, has given up the ghost . Does it have to be replaced with a fully sealed fitting, as per a bathroom, or can we use any type of fitting ?

Is it the bulb in the square "bulb" fitting or the starter? We had a round such thingy with starter, and I got both from a lamp shop in town.

Not a new lamp. Just the circular "bulb" and the starter.

It is a squarish Mazda tube bulb - have tried replacing each to no avail and the guy who was here yesterday for plumbing reckoned it was past it (15+years old)!

So you have replaced both the bulb and the starter?

Ours was 35 years old, btw....

The plumber, or you or your dp did not by any chance disable that circuit?

What do you have in the utility room - do you have a sink?

These are the rules for bathrooms -

Zone O is inside the bath or shower itself. Any fitting used in this zone must be low voltage, (max 12v) and be rated at least IP67 which is total immersion proof.

Zone 1 is the area above the bath to a height of 2.25m from the floor. In this zone a minimum rating of IP44 is required. If the fitting is 240v a 30ma residual current device (RCD) must also be used to protect the circuit in this zone.

Zone 2 is an area stretching 0.6m outside the perimeter of the bath and to a height of 2.25m from the floor. In this zone an IP rating of at least IP44 is required. In addition it is good practice to consider the area around a wash basin, within a 60cm radius of any tap to be considered as zone 2.

Zone 3 is anywhere outside zones 0,1 and 2 (subject to specific limits) and where no water jet is likely to be used. No IP rating is required.

I'd say if it's not within 60 cm of a tap, you're probably OK with a normal light.

Our utility has a normal light its about 2 feet from the sink tap if that helps

Thank you that is very helpful. Yes there is a sink and it is about 1.5 m below the light, but not quite directly underneath. We had a leak in the bathroom above which came through but the light was on the blink (literally!) before this. So it sounds as if we need a zone 2 type to err on th side of caution but normal might be ok.
