It is going to be restored today. Feel free to join me. Reporting back every 20 minutes. My house stinks, its vile, I have my work cut out but determined to change. Will be back at 12.20 to report.

Hi! If you mean your house is a mess, I'll be watching and looking for any tips, mine looks like I've been burgled

Greensleeves · 13/11/2008 12:02

your spelling is even worse

mumnosbest · 13/11/2008 12:16

Maybe you should say 'your spelling is appalling' Shouldn't laugh I had to check how to spell it and should be tidying my own house, not spellings on MN!

Geepers · 13/11/2008 12:19

I am at a loss as to how anyone's house can get in such a mess as to be described as vile or appaling.

Either I have a very tidy family, or I have very low standards, but my house is visitor presentable at all times and I probably only do three 30 minute bursts of housework a day, if that.

slaterness · 13/11/2008 12:24

beds made
washing on
started washing up
clean washing away
hall and bathroom tidied

having cup of tea now

I think, Geepers, that's fine if you've always kept on top of things. I know that my house is a tip because we've got too much crap in too small a space, and since I had DD in Jan I just haven't had the energy/had free hands long enough to do it. Hence it has piled up and now needs a serious overhaul. If I could do that then it would be generally presentable all the time.

Fiveplusbump · 13/11/2008 12:25

Well done .

slaterness · 13/11/2008 12:26

Thanks your support is greatly valued glad I name changed now.

OP posts:
Geepers · 13/11/2008 12:26

that would have taken me about 10 minutes.

Maybe if you just got on with it, turned the computer off and drank less tea, then your house would look all the better for it?

slaterness · 13/11/2008 12:28

Thanks 5 plus Have had a bad time of things, rather than sit and winge about them have decided to take control.

On a diet thread would people come on and say "I dont know how you lot all got so fat? I am thin at all times"

beds made - 10 minutes (3 beds)
washing on - sort load, take downstairs, put on - 5 minutes
started washing up - would use dishwasher
clean washing away - if I did it all, this would take a while!
hall and bathroom tidied - 15 minutes to quickly clean, tidy and hoover (bathroom & 2 loos)

10 minutes to do all that geepers? You must be super quick then. I certainly couldn't do all that in such a short time.

How old are your children?

slaterness · 13/11/2008 12:37

Thanks 4arms. I also have to factor in some time to have a cry, lots of my daughters things around the house just now (she died) and I hadn't put them back in their place so have to do that while tidying. But of course we should all be prefect, I could be depressed/have a physical disability/be heavily pregnant and in pain but nope judgy geepers doesnt care, just wades in and offends.

Well deserved cup of tea slaterness
Agree completely with Eyeballs, that's my prob too
Geepers, think you are blessed with a very tidy family. No way could I spend 120 mins a day tidying, not with 2 LO's

Geepers · 13/11/2008 12:38

My children are 15, 7, 5 and nearly 2.

Making each bed takes about 30 seconds. Fluff up pillows and throw duvet over x 3

Washing takes 2 minutes, if that. All goes in together, one load in morning, one in evening.

Clean washing is also put away daily, takes 2 minutes, we live in a bungalow so no going up and down stairs. Older boys rooms upstairs and he takes his own clothes up.

Nothing to tidy in hall, it's always tidy, takes 2 minutes to hoover.

Bathroom is also done every day so always tidy and clean, again takes 5 minutes to spray, wipe and rinse bath and sink and bleach loo.

Geepers · 13/11/2008 12:41

slaterness I didn't say everyone should be perfect. I also pointed out that maybe I have very low cleaning standards.

TheShipsCat · 13/11/2008 12:41

Slaterness. Sorry to hear about your dd.

my place is the same - vile and - well, just vile really. And you are doing much better than me today. I have done 2 lots of washing, put away dry clothes, made one bed and done dishwasher. That's it. And its already 12.40.

AuntieMaggie · 13/11/2008 12:55

Slaterness - so sorry to hear about your dd. No wonder your house is in a mess - nobody should judge you for that.

I think you're doing great - just do things in your own time.

My place is vile at the moment too but me and DP work long hours and to be honest at the evenings and weekends the last thing I want to do is housework.

frostyfingers · 13/11/2008 13:02

Geepers, that's 90 minutes a day, wow, I'm impressed! Downstairs here is reasonably presentable most of the time, a quick hoover a scooping of stuff off surfaces does the trick if visitors are coming, but luckily I live in the sticks and drop by visitors are rare. When I have VIP guests (MIL this weekend) the house gets a proper go over which lasts a week and I feel smug. Bathrooms and loos are done on an as needs basis and I muck out dc's rooms really thoroughly (empty drawers, move beds, thin toys) the week after they go back to school at the beginning of term. Life's too short to be polishing all day - anyway got a garden to dig, 3 dc's to taxi, and 2 dogs to walk, oh and 2 days work a week as well!

Fiveplusbump · 13/11/2008 13:08

Well done slaterness it must be hard going for you ..I know how you feel my dd passed away 10 years ago next month and I remember well hw hard it was to come across something of hers in the washing pile or while tidying round.

Dont worry about a little mess and concentrate on getting through this awful time and keep coming on MN most people here are quite supportive .

mumnosbest · 13/11/2008 13:08

Oops my maths is slipping, 30x3=90

Slaterness - only do it if you want to, or may be ask for some help/company whilst you do it.... When I visit people I don't ever notice how messy/dirty their house is, I go to see them not their surroundings - I always try and remember that when I'm stressing that the house is a mess and people are coming! Good luck.

EffiePerine · 13/11/2008 13:14

FWIW, our flat is actually in a good state atm and easy(ish) to keep tidy, but only becasue we had a massive clean and sort out as we have just put it on the market. If you're pushed for time/energy, woudl it be worth getting in a company to blitz the place? Then all you have to do is maintenance which is much easier. I was astounded at the time it took to properly clean a tiny flat - 2/3 days solid work.

mellyfriedonionsonahotdog · 13/11/2008 13:17

slaterness...sorry to hear about your daughter... sending you a teeny hug (())

well done on getting cracking with the house.
mine too is a pit. have worked for 4 days on it now, and feeling so much better about everything. my head feels less cluttered too iykwim?

the secret is, according to the fly lady thingie, is not to start something which can't be finished in 15 minutes, so don't empty the whole contents of the room into a pile on the floor...pick a shelf at a time, and do it until its finished. my mum (who can't understand how i live in such a messy pit!)says the secret is to have a place for everything, and everything in its place...is that mary poppins who said that?

good luck...slowly slowly, and it'll be looking better in a matter of an afternoon.
well done x
