There is a dead mouse in our piano - shudder.

We have had a serious mouse problem and have been over run, they were in all the kitchen cupboards and we could hear them in the walls and ceilings.

We tried traps but caught nothing so we have resorted to poison.

It is working, I have so far recovered three dead bodies, two behind the piano and one above a kitchen cupboard. All very smelly.

The smell is lingering in the sitting room, I followed my nose to the piano, pulled it out and I can see a hole in the fabric on the back. The mouse must be in there but I can't see it.

How long does the smell last and how can I cover it up? At the moment have all the windows open and have been liberally scattering Lavender oil.

Oh God, we have one under flooorboards at the moment. Is the most vile smell. My experience is it crescendos then goes in approx 7 - 10 days. It is a loooong time...

It is vile. Lots of fresh air is helping at the moment but it's freezing.

I hate to think how many dead ones there will be. I opened the kitchen drawer last week and there were about 12 mice all running for cover amongst the popcorn and stick cubes.

Bastards.

We have suffered from recurrent mouse issues which have been much better since we got cats! This is the first stinking dead mouse incident we have had in a year (apart from a few headless gifts). I think in mouse-ridden areas, cats may be the only answer. I don't think anything covers the smell. I am sitting here with window open....

We have a cat but she can't get at them as they are under the floor and in the walls. She is obviously feeling inadequate and possibly a bit threatened as she keeps demonstrating her prowess as a hunter by bringing us rats.

We have just recently got a mouse problem and found droppings inside my piano too. We tried humane traps and sonic repellents but they haven't worked and yesterday one ran across the upstairs room where my ds was using the computer which was a bit of a shock as I stupidly thought they were only downstairs.
The thought of them scampering across the bed at night was enough to get the pest control man in last night and he has put down some poison so I have the horrible smells to look forward to. I know it's silly but I can't help but feel bad though that we have to kill them, especially when the pest man said he thought there was a family with babies in the bottom of the airing cupboard. My dh keeps reminding me of the diseases they can spread or that they can cause a house fire by chewing through cables and that soon stops my fretting about little mouse babies.

We have never had a problem with them before but there have been a few threads on mn recently about mice so I wonder if this year has been particularly bad

I know what you mean winetime, about feeling sad for killing them. I was actually mildly amused when I first heard them under the kitchen floor as they seemed to be congregating in the area under DS4's chair - he is messy and there was probably a veritable mouse feast down there.

When I opened the kitchen drawers to find split food packets, nibbled stock cubes and cooking choc, not to mention lots of droppings and that all invading stench of mouse wee I realised they had to go for the sake of our health

The dead smell seems to have subsided a bit. We are keeping the house cool (not too cold tonight luckily) in the hope they will just mummify and dry out without too much stink.

Had a major mouse problem a few months ago. Got the council out and the man recommended an air freshener that "neutralises" smells and not just masks them eg Oust (I think) and Neutridol (sp?).

Didn't seem to notice much of a smell in my house - could be permanently smelly though (with 4DS's and DH ).
