Tell me your secrets. I have recently gone from working 2 hours a week to 12 hours a week and cannot fit anything in. I have 2 very active dd's (who I LOVE being out with all the time) and two very lively collie dogs. My house seems to be a constant tip and it is getting to me. How can I do it all?>???? Advice needed thanks.

Otherwise you end up in the dilemma of the 2000's, instead of having it all like The Sisterhood tell you is possible, you end up Doing it All, and being knackered.

I work 4 days (primary teacher) and the kind of stuff I do is:
Plan meals in advance and shop at 8am on a Saturday - it's really quiet and I get to go and have a coffee at Caffe Nero afterwards. DH looks after the DSs and gets a wash on then.
A bit of batch cooking/sandwich making and freezing once shopping is unpacked. DS2 potters about the kitchen and "helps" whilst I do that.
I do the prep for school I need to do on a Sunday night whilst DH irons. Yes, he is an angel, yada, yada, yada
We keep on top of things. Dull, but 20 mins a day really does have an effect
The dishwasher is a cupboard for dirty pots and should be utilised as such!
Clean the bathroom whilst kids are in bath
Get everything ready the night before - lunchboxes refilled once empty, clothes laid out
I also get up two hours before we need to leave and that usually means that I can tidy the kitchen before we leave which is a lot more welcoming
Homework as soon as possible
Dim the lights in the evening as said above!

I never thought of getting up earlier to fit more in. Of course the time I have spent on here tonight I really could have had a lot done.

FairyMum · 09/11/2008 21:30

I don't! The only thing that is done regularly is the washing and I Don't Believe in Ironing so that solves that problem.
Everything else is done randomly when I can persuade DH to look after DS for a while so that I can get on with it. But DH does the cooking and washing up mostly so that doesn't build up.

I send the ironing out when it gets out of control but generally do it on a sunday night while dh baths the kids. I fill the dishwasher b4 i go to work so im not coming back into pots and try and cook using the slow cooker on a work day so im not cookingwhen i come in, the shower is growing and i am hoping it will self clean soon , the front room is always a bomb zone until kids go to bed so i always close the curtains early and close the hall door as i answer the front soor. Ohi also ban anyone who doesnt live here from going upstairs. That all makes me sound quite slovenly but im not i just accept things will be bumpy until both kid go to school.

I have no idea how FT mums (and dads) fir it all in. At present I do 2 days a week at work, and 3 days of volunteer work at DD's school. My house is neglected! I try and tidy every night, with DH - we always sort kitchen and living room out. Bedrooms are another matter though. Bathrooms I do at weekends and then keep on top of them during week with the anti bac type wipes. I do intenet food shopping or fit in an hour at supermarket during DD's drama class on a Tuesday night. House gets a vacuum and clean at weekend, I try and get vacuum round once more during week before or after school.

When working just the 2 days a week I am suoper tidy and clean.

From Jan I wll be working 5 mornings a week so will have to see how that works out.

rookiemater · 09/11/2008 21:40

I work 4 days a week , DH f/t. We have a cleaner 3 hours a week, she does ironing as well, bless her. We accept that house will not be immaculate in her absence.

On day off I try to get 2 loads of washing done and hung up and make a couple of meals in advance for the week.

I point blank refuse to be doing housework in the evening if DH isn't as I am a wife not a domestic skivvy.

Oh and we do houseswaps once a year which involves 2 days of manic cleaning ( me) and gardening (DH) before we go to get the house in a state that would be acceptable to a stranger.

singyswife · 09/11/2008 21:43

I normally do a mad clear out before xmas and my house looks all lovely for a week then it all goes to pot. I am aware that this time is coming up and maybe I need to get my finger out but I just DO NOT HAVE THE TIME. AARRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
