Try an eraser, rub it over the residue the same way that you run out pencil on paper. It works for sticker residue so it ought to work for sellotape too.

God this front door is going to look a picture - a mess of mixed up mayonnaise, nail varnish remover, sugar, soap and bicarb

I would use White Spirit - but it depends if that something you keep in the house!

YEs I have white spirit - think I'll try that first as its just under the sink and requires no effort finding it!!

Metal Polish - brasso or silvo (used to use it to get tape makes off plastic bookjackets when I worked in a library)
