would you switch your boiler off if you're away for a few days, or leave it on low to tick over ?

even though it's not likely to freeze, I would probably just leave it on low.

DANCESwithLordPsGhost · 27/10/2008 07:28

I would leave it on low to avoid damp and if it is very cold to avoid freezing pipes bursting (this happened to my parents neighbour it was an absolute nightmare, he lost most of his possessions I think as they were away for a couple of weeks and the pipes burst at the beginning of their holiday) it's not worth turning it off!

thanks ! any other opinions ?

if its in the depths of winter and you have pipes in the loft/outside wall then I would leave it on at a low temp.

Down here its due to get to -3c on wednesday night but if I were going away for a week this week I wouldnt leave it on as we havent got it on anyway, this doesnt count as prolonged cold in my eyes.

You leave it on timer just for an hour twice a day

GooseyLoosey · 27/10/2008 08:38

Only if the forecast was for vey cold weather. I would set it to come on in the middle of the night (when its coldest) for about 30 mins.

LostProphet · 27/10/2008 08:40

I would leave the thermostat low, but that is partly for the cat too.

PenelopePitstops · 27/10/2008 08:42

one of the conditions of our lease is leaving the heating on for an hour a day over the winter when we go home (student house) so i would leave it on

nannyL · 27/10/2008 09:31

when i went away for 2 weeks in february i left mine on timer for about an hour early morning and an hour late evening and turned the thermostat down to about 14c

i figured if it was that cold the whole system wouldnt freeze

me heating also will ONLY be on if the hot water is on as well so i turned the water tank thermostat down to about 20C

FourArms · 27/10/2008 09:31

We haven't got a thermostat, so the only option would be setting the timer, which I haven't got to grips with I usually leave it off, and ask a neighbour to put it on as we're on our way back to warm the house up.

PenelopePitstops · 27/10/2008 14:45

setting the timer is it one of those wheel things?

FourArms · 27/10/2008 15:16

Was that to me PP? If so, no, it's electronic, and I haven't got the instructions.

PenelopePitstops · 27/10/2008 15:34

yes fourarms!

oh no thats a bummer i would leave it off, it will be so expensive to have it on all day!

Habbibu · 27/10/2008 15:53

Leave it on, for maybe half an hour per day? Radiators all turned to frost setting.

MorticiaAnnSpookington · 27/10/2008 17:07

I usually leave it on once a day, with thermostat really low, so it comes on every so often to warm the radiators if it goes below a certain temp and keeps the water warm in the tank/pipes
