Mine is broken...again .

I guess I need to buy a new one but this time I'd like one that will not die a few days out of warranty so tell me what microwave you have (or have had in the past) and if it is any good.

Budget is about £50-£60 and I really only use it for defrosting so it doesn't need to do anything fancy.

Do any of you not actually have a microwave? If so why are you reading this thread ?

I'd rather not get one at all as space is at a premium in our kitchen but I do a lot of bulk cooking and really need to be able to defrost things at short notice (plus they come in handy for cooking jacket potatoes ).

Really do not want to be adding another microwave to the landfill in a year or two.

Mine is a 23 year old Toshiba which is still going strong but takes a little longer to get the job done. -
It looks a bit like a nuclear reactor and probably leaks as much as one but it makes a good job of potatoes and porridge.

EyeballsintheSky · 06/10/2008 16:09

Blimey, how do you lot reheat your cups of tea?? I wouldn't have had a single cup since dd was born if it wasn't for the microwave.

JacobsPrincessOfDarkness · 06/10/2008 16:12

Only use mine for cooking peas, heating beans or emergency defrosting. I won't bother to replace it when it dies.

travellingwilbury · 06/10/2008 16:14

Eyeballs I don't drink much tea or coffee in the day thankfully and I found when we did have a microwave I hardly ever used it so we got rid . Jkt pots are much nicer in the oven anyway

WhereWolfTheWildThingsWere · 06/10/2008 16:19

at thread title.

We have a Kenwood simplicity, it is third hand . We have had it 2 years, MIL before us at least 5 years, before that, who knows?

Must be fairly good. Only really use it for beans, soup and defrosting.

Lilymaid · 06/10/2008 16:28

Making porridge, scrambled eggs, reheating drinks, heating milk, ready meals (not too often), small portions of vegetables, warming up scones, starting off baked potatoes ...
I find mine invaluable - but I do have a combination oven/grill/microwave which can substitute for my main oven if necessary.

ohdearwhatamess · 06/10/2008 16:30

We have a very cheap and very basic Sharp one. I only use it for heating up leftovers for babies. Dh uses it occasionally to make porridge.

abear · 06/10/2008 16:33

I have a very basic Samsung - now 6 years old & has been perfect. I brought it direct from an electrical wholesaler for £29. Bargain.

snorkle · 06/10/2008 19:21

GentleOtter, I wonder if yours is the same as ours? It was a wedding present from my parents 24 years ago. They bought the same model for themselves too (theirs is slightly older than ours) and both are still going strong.

snorkle · 06/10/2008 19:23

Got that wrong: 22 years ago.

Thanks folks.

I'm still none the wiser . Just one look at the price of the damn things brings out my 'Northern' genes and makes me think I can make do without one.

Definitely seems that 'they don't make 'em like they used to' though. My parent's first microwave lasted 20 years+ - very similar to gentleotter's 'nuclear reactor' ()I should think.

We do JPs in the microwave then crisp them up in the oven for 10 mins at the end. I've given up reheating tea in mine - by the third reheat it is 3/4 skin and 1/4 tea.....hmmmm nice.

my old microwave was about 16 years old when I junked it last year. I can't remember the make, but it was a very cheap one.

I have a built in space saving combi oven now, that microwaves as well as grills and cooks as a normal oven

GentleOtter · 06/10/2008 22:25

snorkle - it is a biggish microwave with sort of a dark smokey plastic front and no nonsense buttons on the right hand side.
I am really fond of it.

AtheneNoctua · 06/10/2008 22:47

Mine is crap. Don't buy a panasonic nn-gd546w. The fan goes onlong after the microwave is turned off. Bloody waste of electricity and really gets on my nerves.

snorkle · 07/10/2008 09:26

Sounds as if it might well be the same! We like ours too, though sometimes when I'm short of space I wish it was smaller. The thing I really like about ours is the simplicity of the buttons. One dial for power level (nearly always on 9, the highest); one for the timer (in minutes - none of this seconds lark) and a big friendly start button. It confuses people with newer ones, but I find it really quick & easy to set.

GentleOtter · 07/10/2008 11:33

I found ER-5400 on the bottom right hand corner

snorkle · 07/10/2008 13:36

Mine is ER-665 (didn't notice this earlier)! Not exactly the same then, but a cousin perhaps?

NumberFour · 07/10/2008 16:39

LOL!! love OP's intro
got nothing to say about mine other than it needs cleaning!

GentleOtter · 07/10/2008 19:18

Well mine has a cousin actually
