Line drying virgin

RambleOn · 13/09/2008 21:09

To my shame I have only ever, in my nearly 40yrs, dried clothes in the tumble drier

I am now about to start line drying as much as poss (yes, bad timing as it is just turning autumnal I know)

So, can you help me buy the right 'stuff' to make it as easy as possible?

Do I want a rotary thingie, or a simple line across the garden? What else do I need?

Can anyone give me the benefit of their experience?

I find things dry much quicker outside than on a rack inside. I've had waistbands of jeans damp after 2-3 days trying to dry inside!

expatinscotland · 13/09/2008 21:52

the only time things dry well on racks indoors is when the heat is on .

had an extremely wet winter here, wettest Jan-August since 1948 officially.

so a lot of stuff wound up on the racks.

Have seen that one in IKEA - will go in the week and get one - great excuse to get meatballs too.

Do you ever have things go smelly, and have to rewash? Wouldn't they smell of mildew after 3 days?

It's sort of semi-rural. But will be moving if the bloody house ever sells

The Ikea one (antonius) is the one I'm going to get- it has a nice small 'footprint' but was out of stock at our branch last weekend

Smelly has been a bit of a problem this summer- its been sooooo damp

expatinscotland · 13/09/2008 21:56

no, i don't have things go smelly because i finish them off in the dryer if they're not drying outdoors in seasons that aren't winter.

in winter, i bring them in and put them on racks and, as the heating is on, they dry.

Cappuccino · 13/09/2008 21:58

I get dizzy putting things on a rotary dryer

had one on holiday once felt like I was being sucked into a vortex

putting them on a long line means sun shines on stains eg tomato and bleaches them down

Ceolas · 13/09/2008 21:59

I always think of you as the eco queen, cappuccino. Do you ever tumble dry?

Cappuccino · 13/09/2008 22:01

tumbler is on now along with the dehumidifier

I have failed you

everything was dry till dd1 pissed about mythering and my washing got re-damp

Ceolas · 13/09/2008 22:03

Ah, sorry to put you on a pedestal!

expatinscotland · 13/09/2008 22:03

i do one load every evening so it's ready to peg out in hte morning.

i never run the washing machine whislt we are sleeping because i am paranoid about fires.

Ceolas · 13/09/2008 22:07

I am washing all day long here. Honestly, I do at least two with towels, sheets, nappies as well as the clothes.

no news, tre .

i do one load of an evening, and, usually on alternate days, a couple of other loads.

so 1-3/day for us.

DabblesInDabbles · 13/09/2008 22:08

What about spiders???

Does everyone dust them off every day? or leave them be???

DO you have a timed start, trefusis? I put mine on to finish just about when we're getting up. Then you have to get out of bed to switch off the beep!

themoon66 · 13/09/2008 22:41

I've managed to get a line up wherever I am. Even in a tiny terrace house with a back yard.

when i lived in a cottage in the woods, I had a line between trees.

expatinscotland · 13/09/2008 22:42

there really is nothing like the smell of line dried clothes, IMO.
