Sewing name labels on school uniform - help please

I saw something on here a while ago about sewing on labels. Someone said something about doing them "on a loop". Can anyone explain what this means?

If it's going to make my life easier over the next couple of evenings I'll be eternally grateful.

wouldnt bother doing all that - my lad started a new school in January and I found a prodct called attach a tag (recommended by my mum - who uses it in the care home she works in.) It took me about 5 minutes to label all his uniform and sports kit - it still gets kicked around the boys changing room but at least I can find it now!!

I agree about sewing being best for handing uniform on - all ours has to do 2 children if possible. I've been given loads of second hand items and struggled to pick off ironed-on/ obliterate felt tip. I draw the line at socks though - they get a little ironed on name on the sole.

I like sewing but still hate doing labels!

In emergencies, white electrical tape round the side label written on with Sharpie lasts a surprising number of washes.

I have to do all the stuff I never normally bother with because DS is actually quite good at not losing stuff (socks, pants) and "home clothes" for a school trip. I am procrastinating, but actually quite like an evening in front of the TV sewing on labels.

Those clips (as linked to by MatNanPlus) are perfect for socks and cuddly toys (all animals planning on going to school have to be named first in this household). I also have ink transfers, sew in labels, huge inch-high-letter labels for the outside of games kit, towels, bags, etc, and stamps. I think I may have a problem.

DS's schools anal prescribed method for sock naming is to fold the nametape over the top of the sock and sew it to itself IYSWIM. It works (or it did on the 2 pairs of socks I did before I recalled that DS has yet to lose a sock in 5 years at school, at which point I stopped bothering)

I'll sew in your name tags OP. It's lovely and relaxing!

Fabric glue. Someone just suggested it and I found some in Poundland.

www.amazon.co.uk/Sewing-Quick-Fabric-Glue-50ml/dp/B0035OKOAY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1333487918&sr=8-1 Here it is. Stick it together for 5 mins, then iron. Easy.

I bought 100 name tags for DD when she started school. Nice posh Cash ones. All sewn in posh lettering.

She's just leaving Yr11 now and I have 97 left!

Sharpies are the way forward! Grin

I sincerely hope the OP has managed to sew her labels in by now.
